Been thinking about something like this all winter.
Just can't justify a $100+ for an aftermarket one.
Did you use stainless steel joints and bolts?
yes, they were stainless

did the same mod, but just one difference.

If ya go to your local tractor dealer you may find that they have the heim joints in stock, and better yet they may be the heavy duty bronze bushing version like my local dealer. Should last for ever, and with the bronze they shouldn't ever squeak.

I used Speedway to order the Heim joints when I did this mod to my bike. It is a simple 1 beer mod.

thanks for the info, it's good to have choices

these are the same joints that i used on my last bike, an 07 road king. i had over 40,000 miles on the bike (over 30,000) with the joints and they showed no sign of squeaking. but for as cheap as they were, if they ever do squeak, and it's enough to bother me, i'll just replace them. preferably with the ones that you got

gardner wescott has all sorts of spherical rod end bearings. if you go to any streetrod shows, you'll find vendors that sell them. the stock ones are said to be prone to failure, but i've never had one fail. speedway motors and summit racing are a couple of other sources. whatever you do don't use the really cheap ones, if you do, you'd be better off staying stock. when in doubt, use a stainless washer to capture the ball.

I did the same mod but used black allen head bolts from Lowes. It contrasts well with the black engine.

Got to experience this first hand on Saturday while out for a lunch ride. About 100 miles from home and the shift linkage breaks. One of the other riders had some zip ties. Back in business in a few minutes. I am going to use these parts to fix my shifter linkage. Thanks for posting.
