Default trouble starting up

I just bought a 97 FLH with 60,000 miles on it. It starts up ok, but unless I stay on the throttle a little bit it dies. Once I start riding it a bit and come to a stop, it will idle with no problem. Not a clue what it is as I am new to motorcycles. Any ideas would be helpful

Do you use the choke to turn on the bike? I have to use it for about 45 seconds till it warms up a bit. If I would rejet my the carb it would need the choke on. Ben

If carb, then yes use the choke to start and once started push the plunger in slightly so as to maintain idle.
You don't want to sit idling for more than 5 minutes or so ( that's a max)...usually once the idle seems smooth and you've zipped up and turned on the radio, it's time to shove off.
Leave some choke on for the first mile or so.
behind the plunger is a plastic knurled nut to set the tension for the plunger- on mine I had it set so that the motor vacuum would pull the plunger in if I forgot...

Your carb ( if stock) is the wonderful Keihin CV carb- lots of info on this carb at nightrider.com - bike tech section ( this carb has a black plastic or chrome round cover on the top.

If this is a fuel injected bike, then ignore the above.

I recently sold my '95 FLHTC with 80,000 miles.

If yours has been maintained regularly, no need to worry about the mileage---'cause at least it's been ridden!

Welcome to the Forums and your new bike.

afraid of that.

I'd look first for a leak at the intake manifold ( as the motor warms the leaks can seal)- but I'd probably have to look for advice from those who know the magnetti-marelli system on your bike.

You need to adjust your cold idle setting. Read this sticky...https://www.hdforums.com/forum/engin...m-systems.html
