Default Adding Speakers to Lowers on 2003 FLHTC

My brother-in-law wants to add speakers to the lowers on his 2003 Electra Glide Classic so I have a few questions....
  1. Is the radio the same on the 2003 FLHTC and FLHTCU?
  2. If so, can I use the rear speaker outputs for the additional speakers? Do I have to activate those ouputs and how is it done?
  3. Would it be easier to wire the speakers on each side in series? if so, what is the impedance of the standard speakers?
I know this is a ton of questions...but if anybody has any experience performing a similar upgrade I would like some feedback. Thanks.

  3. Would it be easier to wire the speakers on each side in series? if so, what is the impedance of the standard speakers? The OEM speakers are 8 ohm impedance.

His easiest option may be to use the Hogtunes fairing lower speaker kit:

http://www.hogtunes.com/bikes/bikes/...5_Classic.html

Unless he has vented fairing lowers, he won't be able to use the speaker boxes from the 2011 CVO SG.

Carl,
He is looking for the cheapest option...add speakers with no amp. Since he added the H-D vented lowers to the Classic and does not have rear speakers...I thought it might be a fairly easy upgrade. Use the rear speaker outputs (if available on the radio) to power the speakers in the lowers.

Since his bike's OEM radio doesn't have rear speaker outputs, his cheapest option may be to buy the '11 CVO SG speaker boxes and some inexpensive 2 ohm impedance 6.5" Infinity Reference speakers, and wire the speakers in series to the 8 ohm fairing speakers. Whether he'll hear much is another story since the OEM radio provides a max of 20W per channel @ 8 ohms and the impedance will be raised slightly wiring 2 ohm or 4 ohm speakers in series.

He can also shop for the discontinued (?) Hogtunes 5.25" fairing lower speaker kits (that were replaced by the 7" kit) and hope to score a deal, or find a used kit on Ebay or elsewhere.

Post a picture if the b-i-l does anything; always interested in cheap solutions.

I gather from your response that the radio on the FLHTC does not have rear speaker outputs. I was hoping the Classic and Ultra shared the same radio. Oh well.....

He is willing to change the fairing speakers... so I could go with two 4 ohm speakers in series on each side and maintain the same impedance. Not sure if that improves anything.

Default Update

Found out from 2 sources that the 2003 Electra Glide Classic and Ultra share the same radio. So, I should be able to use the rear speaker outputs (which are presently un-used) to drive a pair of lower fairing speakers.

More when I make this mod to my brother-in-laws bike........
