By the looks of it I would need to remove the gas tank. Is that a pretty safe bet or is there some trick to getting around tank removal. If it makes a difference my bike is not EFI. Thanks in advance.
All you wrenches out there and can't get an answer to such a simple question??? My tank is full, I have the wires that were delivered yesterday and the forecast is gonna keep that tank full for a while. I have emptied fuel tanks before but usually a messy process and one I hoped to avoid.
I've had my tank off many times - full and empty. Only difference is the weight - it comes off either way, or am I missing something?
I changed my wires last year when the hair on my left leg started standing up and touching the rear cylinder plug wire was exciting, but not in a good way. If I remember correctly, I just lifted the back of the tank enough to put a piece of 2x4 under the rear. The new wires were thicker so they gave me a little bit of a hassle trying to bend them around like the factory install.
Thank you and I was afraid because I bought the Sterling Chromite II Spark Plug Wires that I might have issues as they are much stiffer than stock wires. Guess I need in the future to wait until later in the day to ask such questions when more folks are at home.
I didn't remove the gas tank on my 2010 RK, I removed the seat, then removed the bolt holding down the gas tank and set a block of wood under it. You only have to run the front cylinder wire up the channel. I think theirs only one clip for the wire that's hard to get to. If you are installing Screamin Eagle wires like I did, they are bigger around and a little harder to get into the clips. Good Luck!!

Thanks but again I am using the Sterling Chromite II Spark Plug wires and they are extremely stiff. To boot both are the same length so I hope they did not send me the wrong cables. Seems they should be made to proper length??
I just changed the wires on my Street Glide and Deluxe to US Cool Wires. I unbolted the front of the tank on the Glide, lifted it up a bit, and was able to pull the wires off of the coil. The new wires are a bit thicker and alot stiffer than the OE wires. They didn't fit into the clips the OE slipped into, oh well, as long as they stay off of the motor.
RonP42 has the right idea, that's how I changed mine and did not remove the tank. Just remove the three tank mounting bolts and move the tank up and hold in place with a block of wood. The wires just plug into the coil under the tank.
