Default To Dyno or not to Dyno

I am installing my 103 this weekend and was wondering. I have a thundermax zipper. Do I still have to Dyno this bike or will the Zipper with the correct map upload and riding time tweak the correct settings.

You're not giving enough info. Did you do a 103 build? Intake, Exhaust, cams?
If you spent the money on a build, why not get it dynoed?

It is a 103 build. Exhaust Bub True Duels, cam woods 555, heads down by tman. I would get it done but Im not sure that the zipper will not tune it almost at 100......that is why Im asking ....what other infor do you need

A thundermax zipper is the computer or EFI Electronic Fuel Injection. Instead of going to harley to have your bike mapped you do it from your PC.

I agree with the I should Dyno. I wont be able to do it for a month or more.

Get it dynoed immediately. You can break the motor in on the dyno.

Unless that comes with an auto-tune function I would definitely get it dyno'd. You've done a lot of changes to your engine and the 300.00 or so you'll pay to dyno it will be worth it. No sense in spending the kind of money you've already spent unless you're going to get your money's worth out of it. Just make sure you get a GOOD TUNER, not just anybody that has to happen to have a dyno-jet.

  • No. Heat cycle the motor once and then take it out in the country on a quiet highway and put an engine load on it by accellerating through gears 2-4 to 60% max rpm (roughly 3800 rpm's) . Speed is not as critical as hard accellerations. Decelerate with the throttle plate completly closed. Do this 5-6 times and then ride the bike by varying the speed. Do this again and again thoughout the first 50 miles. When you get close to 50 miles, increase your rev limit to 5500. The ring seating process will be almost done in the first 50 miles. After 50 miles, ride it like you stole it. What ever RPM harley recommends; I don't know. In my experience if you use Harley's method, you will have a weaker power plant and an engine that may run hotter than it should. This is just one man's opinion, as Michael Savage would say.
But first you need to have a program in the bikes computer that is close to what your engine configuration is. Whoever put the engine package together for you should have put the program in your computer or directed you to the person(s) that could.
Don't even consider breaking the motor in until you know the facts about your ECU program.

Now, back to engine break-in; here's a link that's helped me tremendously!
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Good Luck! Give everyone an update!
