Default Alpine IDA-X100M Install Question

I'm thinking of swapping out my stock HD Radio for the Alpine IDA-X100M. Mainly because I want to be able to control my Ipod through the head unit.

Can anyone tell me what I will need to complete this install? Will I need a radio adapter kit or will it just fit in the factory hole? I assume I will need some sort of switch interface so I can control the radio and ipod from the handlebars?

One last question, Is the Alpine IDA-X100M really waterproof or just water resistant? Will it stand up to a hard downpour?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Take care,
Willie

Hey Willie,

Why not the Harley-Davidson ipod interface then?

I test rode a CVO with this, my ipod touch in the rt saddlebag.
radio display showed song/artist etc
had full control with the stock switches- and it charges.

Now - here's what i didn't like!- I had to keep taking my eyes off the road to see what i was dialing up...
I'd be afraid that the distraction would get me in trouble.

so instead I have my ipod touch in a clear face holster clipped to my windshield bag. That way i can see the display while riding which is great if i am using a map or have directions on the screen.

i use the headphone out ( which has more gain than the line out from the 30 pin connector) ---dial up the adaptunes app, which does auto volume control---and i use a cable with a mic kit, which has an inline pause play switch- easy to pause at a toll booth, or anytime I need the sound off quick.
( I am cheap, so pleased that my best -so far- solution ran me less than $20 for holster, cable with switch, and charger)

I know alot of guys use a sony stereo with a biketronics interface to the bar controls, don't know if it accepts the ipod.

I installed the IDA-X100 (non waterproof version) on my bike. I used the hawg wired radio bracket, don't see how you could install without as the radio is smaller than the stock one. I however had an amp installed so I did not buy an adapter to wire it in. (was just a ground, 12 V constant, 12V switched) I did use the PAC adapted to wire in the hand controls. That took a little time but worked well when I was done with installing it. The radio works well. I had the ipod hooked up and the sirius module. Loved it. At the time the stock Ipod interface was not available so I may have just gone that route.

Biketronics sells a clear "bubble shield" that you could keep in the hard bag. It just slides in the radio cavity,...for those rainy days !

I have the X-100. Used the hawgwired bezel and cradle. Also installed the ARC mini amp on top of radio. Bought an extension iPod wire and my iPod sits in a saddlebag guard bag. Controlled by the head unit. I also bought the hawgwired universal radio adapter to control the radio with hand controls.

It's all not cheap, but it all works perfect and I have no complaints.

Can you give more info about what the "PAC" adapted to hand controls is and how you wire it in?

Thanks

You will also need the special cable from alpine for the ipod interface, I forgot what number it is, but it tells you in the install directions. Costs about $20 on ebay. The connector that comes with the head unit is a USB interface and won't display all the song info. I can't say anything about the handlebar controls.
