Changing mine tomorrow (20,000 mi service). Amsoil all the way: 20w50 in the crankcase, 10w40 in the primary, and 75w140 severe gear in the tranny

I guess I am one of the few people still in the stone ages of oil - using dino instead of synthetic.

Because I don't know a thing about mechanical things I really do enjoy reading what other people do and why.

Since I don't understand motorcycle engines (or any engine for that matter) I have to listen to someone I trust on what to do. I chose those people to be my two indys who were HD dealer service managers of 12 and 14 years.

They still have me running dino oil and changing oil every 2000-2500 miles. Their recommendation is not to generate themselves money because they don't do the oil changes every time and when they don't they sell me the oil at their cost plus 10%.

Lots of knowlegable folks here and in the Harley world and they have completely different ideas. Go figure.

I'm guessing the majority of your two indy's experience is with EVOs, maybe even Shovels and if that's the case then I am not surprised that they don't recommend synthetic. It's like the old saying goes, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Twin Cams run a little hotter and I can't think of a better application for synthetic oil given its resilience to heat. Also, you wouldn't have to change it quite as often as you do right now with dino, but to each his own. The important thing is that you use the proper grade/weight and you change it when it needs to be changed.

Amzoil 20-50 synthetic in all three areas, just like they recommend. Amzoil's dedicated transmission fluid is their SECOND recommendation for modern HDs.

Ran syn 3 at first, Motor sounded lke a sewing machine after 500 miles, Switched to amsoil and it got quieter and ran cooler, Then switched to Shaffers, all noises are gone and it runs cooler then the amsoil.

Redline shock proof in the trans

Mobil 1 synthetic atf in the primary

All is great in the world now.

I use Mobil 1 in the engine and Redline for the Tranny and Primary.

Amsoil doesn't cool as well and is much nosier than Mobil 1. Last summer when it got so hot there were many people complaining about Amsoil.

That's all hearsay, Amsoil and Mobil 1 are practically identical and the biggest difference between the two is the bottle you pour them out of.

Just hit the 1000 mile mark and getting ready to change the oil in all three holes. Plan to use the Castrol full syn in the engine and primary and Amsoil gear oil in the tranny. Just curious if anyone else is using the Castrol and what they thought of it.
Well mcain49 it's your bike but personally I wouldn't run castrol in my lawnmower, they put it in our Rav4 the third oil change at the dealer(Free Oil Service) and it sounded like a thrashing machine, the next oil change at a closer dealer used Mobil1 syn and it sounded like a different engine, quiet as a mouse, I run Amsoil in engine, primary, and extreme gear in the tranny and don't ever have to think about it twice, I'm just say'n, you get what you pay for.
