I don't know if there is such a thing as a better gasket on a primary, but if you are inclined, check out James Gaskets and Cometic. I'm a believer that a quality gasket matters on the heads. As others have already said, a smooth and clean mating surface coupled with the right torque specs should give you a long life and leak free seal.

Enjoyed reading all these posts. Gaskets sometimes leak, sometimes don't. Most times it has to do with how the surfaces were prepared that the gaskets go onto. And how the gaskets were originally installed, torque sequence etc etc.

As far as gasket types, usually that is application specific, i.e. stiff material or rubber material, or sometimes thick cork material. Usually the type that was engineerd OEM will be the type that is offered for sale.

As far as gasket additional seal caulks etc, I don't like to use the thick gooey gasket seal like the yellow permatex etc that was so popular yrs ago, and many still use it now. It's kinda messy and if not applied even etc can cause more problems than just the dry gasket. And many times a dry gasket installed correctly (without any added sealant) is all that is needed.

But I do like (and have many times) used this thin gasket sealent (I use permatex brand). You spread it on both the part and the gasket. It's a thin easy spread paste that you let dry a few minutes before you assemble the parts. It stays flexible for easy disassembly. What I like about it, is it will hold the gasket in place where sometimes it's hard to keep the gasket where you want it while you are moving the part into place.

Gasgacinch has always worked extremely well for me in the past when needing a glue to either hold the gasket or when directed to use a sealer/glue, heck even Edelbrock has it packaged under their name for sale. Peels right off when disassembling.
