07 Bagger: Look at it this way, your bike WILL look way cooler with the crash bar off!! And if you experience a crash like this:
"February 2008, 11:40 AM, at 25 mph, a2001 FLHRI northbound (one-way) 5th avenue, lane #1, toyota pickup in lane #2 spots open parking space and pulls to the left to park, pulls just ahead of but somehow doesn't notice motorcycle in lane #1, pins motorcyclist between his truck and another unoccupied Nissan pickup truck. Motorcyclist receives $6K in damage, but other than abrasions and a bruise, is unhurt, due to the (now damaged in a V-shape) crashbar on his motorcycle..."
you can have your bike modified into a trike with a rear brake in place of one of the handlebar-mounted brakes, or mate both brakes into the front brake. Of course for walking, you might need a prosthetic leg or a decent wheelchair...
But you WILL look way cooler without that crashbar!

I was going to take the crash bars off after I got my bike. I thought i put the kick stand down all the way but it came back up as i was going to get gas. I leaned it over and it started to go down so the first thing I did was try pushing it and while sort of catching it as I held onto the right handle bar. I heard a pop. I wound up tearing my tendon and the belly of my tricep. This happened in October 2010. Even now as I do tricep extensions I can do 70-90lbs with my left arm and I am barley able to do 40 lbs. It took me 2 months to build back up to 40lbs. The bike is ok but i realized 2 things. The crash bars helped avoid any damage to my bike and numbers 2.....Im an idiot. If the bike ever goes down again, screw it Im letting it go LOL
I took mine off as soon as I picked the bike up. You can see it in my sig block. I always see people saying that you shouldn't the bars off but the softails, dynas, and sporties do not come with them and there is not a reason to rush out and buy them. Do your bike the way you like it.
Softails, Dynas, and Sportsters don't come with thousands of dollars worth of painted fairings and saddlebags that will be crushed if the bike falls over.
