The handle bar switches are connected to a harness that run through the bars then connects to the main harness at the fairing bracket. Everything gets man handled in order to get the inner fairing removed and reinstalled. Since he lost everything on that harness I would think it has something to do with that interconnect.

When checking the connections from the right side, make sure you look at the metal pins inside the connectors. Make sure they are all even with each other, sometimes one will push back towards the harness. If you find one pushed back gently push it back into the connector, you should feel it pop back into place.

Not sure about a 2000 model, but until I changed the bars on my 2009, that wiring bundle was run outside the bars. If that's the case, it should be easy to trace. I've never heard of anyone losing everything on one side. It sounds like the entire plug is loose.
