RE: ride it.Windshield Question for those who know.
Sorry for the pause,
I notice alot of buffering when I ride it. I wear a 3/4 helmet and prescription glasses. I can't see very clear because of all the movement.
What will a different windshield do for me? I presently have a standard clear model. I am 6'1" and have about one or two inches below my line of sight.
I thought about getting prescription riding glasses but am also considering changing windshields because of what someone told me. They said try a smaller windshield. Can this be right? Any help would be appreciated.
RE: ride it.Windshield Question for those who know.
I found that my soft lowers (covering the crash bars) caused alot of wind to be forced up under the fairing crashing into the air coming over it causing the buffeting, took off the lowers & its much better.

The best answer is "depends". Do you like looking over the windshield or through it? If you don't mind looking through it, opt for a taller windshield. If you prefer looking over it, the proper height is as low as you can go and still not get buffering. I prefer to have the lip of the windshield about an inch below my line of site at normal hiway speed. I recently put a Clearview shield with the recurve on and love it. The recurve kicks the windflow up an extra couple inches and allows you to run a lower windshield and still have the benefit of buffering protection. For instance, I used to run a straight 9" shield and looked over it about 1 1/2". With the Clearview (with recurve) I'm running an 8" shield and have less buffering. Check it out I think you'd really like it - good quality and great service. Just be sure and get the height right cause you definately don't want to be looking through the recurve due to the distortion it causes. www.clearviewshields.com
RE: ride it.Windshield Question for those who know.
I'm surprised that you are getting buffetting with a stock 12" shield, but I've found since moving to a fairing mounted bike that there simply is more buffetting opportunity than a standard windshield mounted bike. That said, the only windshield I have found that almost eliminates buffetting is my Cee Bailey SSC 13" (which is equivilent to a 10" standard shield.) It works better than anything I've tried and I have over 10 windshields. Looks like I'm going to add another one though cause I really like the look and idea of the Clearview recurve and would like to go with an 8" one like Mhutch above, if it truly solves the buffetting problem as advertised.

Hey Nelly , my salesman mentioned this baffle to me and I found it helped a bunch. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US
It mounts behind the front fork and pushes the air downward and away from the fuel tank, some of the air goes straight up at you without it,and behind your glasses.
Another thing that helps is the fairing air defletors. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US
The deflectors take some of the wind off your belly and chest and make behind the fairing "more dead" feeling.
Recently a buddy of mine and I want for a 120 mile ride and he was wondering how the deflectors worked , so I put them on his SG for 60 miles and put them back on mine for the return , he said they worked well , but he'd have to get used to the look.
Combined with the 12 inch shield , these things have helped to make my riding more enjoyable.
I'm just 5 foot 9 and I look under the top of the shield by about 3 inches normally.
Enjoy.
Mick

I have the 8" shield from fastaire, fairing deflectors and the fork deflectors. This setup works great for me with my half helmet, I will get the fork baffle later and soft lowers since the cooler weather is on its way.

Bountyhunter
Can you post a picture of the fork baffle? I know I don't have a touring bike yet but I'm dreaming of one everytime I get on my bike. I've don't have any intension of putting it on the FXD but it would be nice to know all the tricks when I get ready for the next big purchase.
