The only reason I thought maybe the ECM might be aware that the bike was in 6th gear. Is due to the fact that the dash has a display that signials when your in 6th gear. I realize that it's not necessary for a display to be triggered by the ECM, that a simple direct sensor could do the same thing. However, I thought just maybe the display was being managed by the ECM and if so then the ECM could be controlling things such as limiting the RPMs in 6th gear. It's entirely possible to set up a ECM to do such a thing. I just don't know if it is? That's why I thought I would come on here and ask, that maybe one of you all had experienced it or had some indepth knowledge of the workings on 07's?
I haven't heard of this issue with earlier year Hawgs it seems to be this 07" year models that have been causing all the fuss. They say you can't change out the pipes or it will void the warranty (Something to do with the pipes having a Catylast converter in them). Now, it may void the warranty but just because a pipe has a Catylast converter in it doesn't mean you can't change it out. You just won't be EPA legal and you may have to do some tweeking to the ECM or Carb...

With the higher ratio of the overdrive sixth, he may have to get that motor spinning higher before he drops it into top gear. Have him rap fifth gear up to atleast 5,000 rpm before going into overdrive and then see what his sixth speed will carry. I used to think that my bikes top speed was about 105, even with all the motor work I've done...then I tried it again while rapping fourth gear up to about 5500 rpm before hitting fifth gear...I shut it down at 115 because the front end was getting scary light.
07 ultra v&h ovals s.e.ac sert with a richer stage1 map.... 110 in 5th with plenty left
Who did the install on the pipes, sert and ac? Did you put them on yourself? Also, are the parts '06 model? The stealership told me they couldn't get the '07 parts until next year.
I think it could be possible to have a rev limiter for 6th gear. I believe all of the new bikes have a 6th gear indicator lamp on their dash. Possibly it could have something to do with that?
Yes they do have a lamp indicator for 6th gear on the dash... While yes a simple sensor could be used to light up the lamp for 6th gear. I'm betting that it's some how activated through the computer and if that's the case? Then its no trouble to have a program in the computer that would limit the RPMs attainable in 6th gear...
I was hoping someone would have an answer to this question, for I'm only guessing?
Its just to dang heavy to pull in 6th gear, do a upgrade to fuel, air and pipes and dont shift to 6th except on flat grades, how dang fast you want a sidecar bike to go?
I don't think the ECM knowes what gear your in. The speed sensor works through the ECM but there is noting to tell the ECM what gear your in. The trans is a simple mechanical device.
sleepneagle,
I type this with all due respect, but the the ecm can be "aware" of the gear you are in. When you put the 6 speed in 6th gear I believe there is a switch in the tranny that is tripped. That is what lights the green "6" on the speedo. That signal could quit possibly be also used by the ECM. Not saying that it is, just that it "could be." Agreed?
