Default A word of warning for 2010 Touring Bikes

I know from doing some searching here that there have been numerous instances of 2008 bikes having problems with the "limp home mode". I just wanted to let you guys with 2010 bikes know that the problem hasn't been solved yet. My 2010 FLHR has just turned 25,000 miles but is still under the warranty - thank goodness.

I started experiencing this problem a little over a month ago. Like others, the engine light would come on and I'd lose all throttle control. I've had the twist grip sensor replaced and that didn't fix the problem. Now, after a week in the shop, my dealer is telling me what I told them awhile ago -- it's the pins on the ECM. My service guy told me today they had ordered the parts and the MOCO is replacing the existing pins with silver pins.

Just wanted to give some of you guys with 2010's with fewer miles a heads-up so you can have this checked out before your warranty expires. I'd hate to imagine the dent this would've put in my wallet if I'd encountered this problem later this year.

Default Pins?

You're saying that the connector pins on the ECM are made out of a material that corodes easily, and creates problems for the ignition?

That's what I took from the service guy's explanation. He went on to say that when they ordered the replacement part(s), they were notified they would have to call and discuss the problem before the parts would be sent. This seemed a little strange to me and almost like this was a recurrence of the 2008 problem. ???

What are the symptoms? My 2010 died on me on Monday. Cruising down the interstate and lost engine.1500 miles on her. Throttle gone. Won't start now. Bike at dealership since Monday morn. No word from them on the diagnosis.

1st time: Country road less than a mile from home. Just got up to speed and the engine light came on and had no throttle control. First thought (newbie) was maybe a sparkplug cable was loose. Jiggled those and futzed around with the ignition several times until it would start back normal.

2nd time: Country road about three miles from the house. Just left an intersection and was chomping down on it pretty good. Starts backfiring and goes into limp mode.

3rd time: Country road about 2 miles from home. Just riding along about 55-60 mph and it cuts out.

4th time: Had just left the dealer after having inspection done. Was on interstate going about 65 mph -- thankfully in the slow lane -- lost all power and was able to get over. I shudder to think what could have happened if I'd been in heavy traffic or in the passing lane and lost power.

After the dealer replaced the Twist Grip Sensor, it happened the last time about two days after I got it back. I had been by the bank, just gotten back on and wasn't even out of 1st gear when it happened. Needless to say, I was a tad hot this time.

I've got my fingers crossed they fix it this time. Nothing sucks worse than having something you can't depend on 100%.

Happened to me twice so far on my 09 EGC. the last time they replaced the connectors on the ECM. Time will tell if that fixes it. Nothing like riding home at an idle

Interesting, all these recurring problems, given the top dollar prices we paid for our bikes. I would expect this from my $9k Honda, not a $$$ Ultra. So much for buying my first Harley.

The ECM is a known problem. It is the reason the XiEDs will not work on some bikes. About time they start admitting to it.

Shouldn't this be a recall or don't they want to admit to anything?
