I am confused. I get more wind noise when I remove the windshield. This I usually use ear plugs for. With the windshield I am listening to tunes on the MP3 player, talking to the GF on the back etc. What do you mean by wind noise? You are riding on 2 wheels in the open air, wind noise is part of any motorcycle experience.
This post all sounds backwards to me. I would think there's LESS wind with a shield for Christs sakes?
The windshield creates sort of a vacuum directly behind it. This vacuum pulls air up from the tank area. That's where the noise and buffeting comes from, that turbulence.
A taller windshield just creates more of that up rush of turbulence.
Test this by placing your hands , palm down, next to the side of your tank at 70 mph. See how that blocks/alters the roar of air? I call it "tank wash".
I have a long beard. With a windshield my beard blows straight up into my eyes at 70mph. If I take the windshield off it's smooth sailing.
I've heard all about how those walrus tusks on the front end work well. I can't bring myself to put something that ugly on my bike though.
Plus one for the wind deflectors or " fangs." HD makes a set for your Road King. I added a set a few years ago after returning to Colorado from Yellowstone. Eighty mile an hour winds in Wyoming. They have made a big difference in wind buffeting and noise.
