Reverse Gear Option for touring

I never thought about reverse much until I had knee surgery. The best thing is park so you don't need reverse, but there are those times when that is difficult. I don't know when Harley started offering reverse, but a friends dad was bragging about the reverse gear on his Harley back in the early 50s, so I don't understand the big deal.
