OKay reword...these are HD approved filters.... if only changing oil and filter every 5k, it is worth the price, and peace of mind.
HD engines are a little different in the way they oil from other engines like in cars. The HD's run a dry sump and there is poor oiling to the cylinder walls. They have spray nozzles that spray oil on the cylinder walls to stop the pistons from gaulding. Some filters such as the old Frams had a paper element that would deteriate and the particles could/would stop up the spray nozzles and cause the pistons to gauld. I have run Cummins diesel engines that have the same spray nozzle setup due to the rods being so long and the cranks are too far away from the cylinders to provide oil to the cylinder walls and wrist pins. Car engines lube the cylinders via crank windage and spray from the rod bearings. Cummins required that you use approved oil filters as they had engines fail for this reason. The ones they recommended were the Mopar, Fleetguard, and Wix as they all had the material that wouldn't breakdown and cause blockage of oil from the spray nozzles. I would trust the Wix. That is my story and I'm sticking to it.
What is this "oil filter" you speak of? The oil I buy doesn't look anything like it does when it comes out of the ground so they must be filtering it at the oil factory but if y'all are gonna make THAT big a deal out of it then just pour it through a coffee filter before putting it in your bike.
Since the initial break in on my 07 FLHTCUI, I have run nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic 20W-50 and STP S3614 filters. My bike has turned over 81K without a hiccup. It has cost me roughly $57.57 per oil change, thats 6 quarts of oil and a filter. I pay $3.57 for the STP filter and $9.00/qt for the Mobile 1 synthetic found at any AutoZone. I will not pay 13-15 bucks for a HD filter made by Champion and $12 and up for the sorry Screaming Eagle Syn oil made my who knows who. Ive been riding Harleys for over 36 years and if you choose to buy into the Harley hype when it comes to something like oil and oil filters then you are probably the guy paying over $200 for an oil change at some overpriced HD dealership putting around town smacking 2K/year on your piece of butt jewelry. Mobile 1 makes the best V-Twin synthetic oil bar none and STP is a micro-pore media filter that meets or exceed OEM performance requirements. Argue if you want but my the HD sitting between my legs is proof enough for me that the oil and filter I use works.
Stock HD THE only way to go...I would not trust a 1.99 filter on a 22000 bike... the moco builds filters for the twin cam... wake up and smell the coffee...
I have used fram filters in my 07 and it actually filtered the oil... I really dont think fram makes a bad filter even with all the bad rep they get. You would think that we would here of more failures if they made such a bad product ...
I've never had a 'failure' with a Fram, and ran them for the first 80,000 miles on my RG. And after seeing how they were built ( You tube video,) I wasn't worried about the fiber end caps ( cardboard.) There are 'cardboards' designed to handle that job I'm sure.
I called Fram 2 weeks ago after reading these posts and discovered that they actually answer there phones at 5 O'Clock on a Saturday afternoon. I asked for the filtration numbers on the 6022. They even called me back the following Monday...great customer service.
But not great numbers:
At 10 microns, the 6022 captures only 50% of particles that size on the first pass.
At 20 mictons - 85%
And at 25 microns - 98%
Which makes the 6022 a great filter for Evolutions, NOT Twin Cams.
I've since switched to Wix 57148. ( Interestingly though, I EMailed Wix for their numbers and they never replied to my Email.) I hope their advertisements are accurate!
Old School here, I use Hd Dino in the engine, and Forumla+ in the Tranny and Primary. Been using Hd oils for over 40yrs, without any Oil related problems. Also use the HD oil filter, and will not change. Guess that makes Me a Dumba**!
Well then that makes 2 of us The amount of money I would save buying non-HD oil and filters stuff is so small it aint worth it.
