I'm getting ripped off! My local Walmart is selling my filters for $2.87 Champion Labs makes the H-D filter to H-D's proprietary specs. Champion Lab also makes Walmart corresponding filter and it meets all OEM specs. Don't let the 5 micron filtering fool you. Their is no industry standard for rating micron filtering. Many filters can catch 1 micron particles depending on the flow rate....
This is an old thread and I didnt go thru every page, but the pages i did read have claims that Walmart filters are made by Wix in one case and by Champion in another. I don't know who makes them personally.
One thing about air cooled motors is that the OIL does about 50% of the cooling, not just the air alone, so for me I go with synthetic and the H-D premium. I dont worry about the extra few dollars for the filter, if the motor fries the MoCo will be fixing it cuz I've got the 5 yr extended warranty in my case. If they wanna sell a cheap filter it will cost THEM money cuz they'd be doing alot of warranty fixes for being cheap on filters is how I see it. There's a middle of the road choice in selecting these is my guess. A company has to balance saving money on the filter (lowest bidder) with having to dish it out to rebuild motors under warranty for big bucks. Therefore I'd think it would be in their best interest to choose a half-way decent if not top-notch filter. And another reason is their reputation... If H-D has the rep of their motors frying at 30-40k, no matter what the reason, then they won't be selling many bikes. If a good filter will make that motor run long and reliably I'd choose that if I was a business owner.
And the Champion Labs website lists their 7022 filter ( with HD Part #,) as being good for both Evo and Twin Cam, so who knows?
The only standardized rating for a filter is the 'one pass catch rate' at a given micron rating, and no manufacturer posts that info on their website, or on their package.
And 'too much' filter slows the flow of the necessary cooling effects of the oil.
8 bucks at a hardware store can get you some tight fitting smooth leather work gloves. (white leather)
couple bucks at wal mart will buy you some boot and shoe dye that applies with a foam tip,
one quick swipe while wearing each glove, let sit in sun for 20 minutes.
10-12 bucks total.
Save your money bros.....

Traveler that is a great idea and I will try that next time. I wouldn't have bought those gloves from the stealer but they gave me a $10.00 off coupon for my B day and figured I better use it.
