One thing that you could try that made a big difference for me using both my Zumo 550 and IPhone as an mp3 player is before you load the song files into your device turn the volume up all the way using your music management software while its still on your computer. That way you are starting with a music file that has a higher starting volume.
In ITunes select the mp3 file - choose get info - then choose options. A slider bar will be revealed - just slide it to 100%.
I am not familiar with other software but I expect it has the same capability. I highly recommend ITunes BTW - it is available free for Windows and Mac.

Just wanted to say I tried this and it works! I have never felt like my iPhone was loud enough, even when listening with headphones. This made a night and day difference when plugging the iPhone into the HK stereo on the Street Glide. Highly recommended.
Also, I should mention you can select as many songs as you want in iTunes (including ALL of them which is what I did) and then apply the change to all of them at once. Takes a little while for the 'puter to process the mp3's and make the change if you're doing 4,000+ at one time like I did. But again, highly recommended.
Also consider using a cable that plugs into the bottom of the iPhone/iPod instead of the headphone jack. I think you'll find this an improvement as well.
