I wanted surprised at what the replacement bushings were for my 04. The original ones in there were brass or bronze, the replacement were split steel.
I never did get them in, because I couldn't get the old ones out, at least not very easily. My collet type pullers couldn't get enough grasp on the thin walled bushings, they'd slip and come up inside the bushings, chewing the bushing up instead. Similar attempts to punch the bushings out. Didn't want to try using a saw to cut them, because I'd almost assuredly end up cutting the primary casing a bit.
Went with an o-ring in between the inner shift lever and the primary case, to take out the side to side slack, and that is working just fine at controlling the rattling.
I thought about drilling and tapping for a zerk fitting, but since it's just a quick job to release the inner shift lever and pull the shaft out to clean it and regrease it, I elected not to.
It is not uncommon to replace the linkage with one with better heim joints. Harley sells and upgraded and you see them on the internet. There has been few stories about them breaking at bad time. My 01 I replaced for hell of it, my 07 I had to
