Repair it quickly! Mine literally "exploded" brake fluid on my tank and inner fairing. Fortunately I was only a couple of blocks from my Harley dealer, and I had plenty of "detailing" supplies with me. Got'er cleaned up, and dealer replaced seal and "lid" under warranty, and told me if I had paint problems they would cover that as well. Culprit was the seal as identified in earlier reply. Good Luck!
HD would not cover mine. It will be the last extended warranty that I ever buy from them. Totally pissed me off.
ESP won't cover cosmetic parts but everything else has better coverage then HD factory warranty or at least that's how it is with my bike at the local dealer.
Mine was replaced under warranty because it leaked. The top was warped. it would spit out little dropplets of DOT 4 all over the paint. I'm glad I caught it. Dealer had another guy who thought the dropplets were from left over washing water. Speckled up his paint. DOT 4 is very very corrosive to paint and it takes no time at all to do damage from what I've seen. And regardless of what some may tell you, it is just as bad on powder coat.
I ride on cruise control a lot. I was noticing my right glove was changing color and my fingers were black after a ride. Turns out I rest my hand over the master cylinder as I want to be close to the brake and throttle, but not put my hand directly on the throttle. Turns out the master cylinder weeps brake fluid around the seal and it was getting wet from it. The cylinder works fine, so I can't really tell if it's porosiy on the gasket or if it's slightly warped or whatever. However, we all know what brake fluid does to paint and coatings.
Mine looks like it has cancer, and has since it was a year old. Will eventually replace it with a chrome one. Funny, none of my Jap bikes ever did this...
Happened the same with mine rear master cylinder. My Suzuki's V Strom DL 1000 with the same age is just like new. Shame on HD!
