2011 Electra Glide Ultra Limited - new pipes and intake
I want to change the stock air cleaner and pipes on my new 2011 Electra Glide Ultra Limited to the Screamin Eagle air cleaner and Vance and Hines Pipes. I received an email that states: 09-'11 Harley's, there are about a dozen ECM sensors that control everything that's fuel, spark, exhaust and intake related. Even changing the spark plugs from the OEM to after market disables the "anti Knock" sensor. You have throttle by wire, MAP, MAF, timing, crank position, over heat, altitude, parade mode which cuts the rear cyclinder off in stop traffic to cool it, air density, throttle speed indicator, oil pressure etc etc. not to mention the extremely complicated computer for the trip / mileage and reserve fuel gauge. Anyway, here's my point, leave it alone for a while! Changing any components will absolutely effect the sensors involved and engine performance will suffer, without all the required upgrades. Some upgrades are not worth the money, my opinion. The $1500 Harley Tax will compute to about a 8 to 10 HP increase or $150 a HP, which you probably won't notice. Is this true and should I not do this. PLEASE HELP!!
Here is what I did to my 2011 FLHTK. Hi-Flo air cleaner, rinehart slipons, SE255 cams and a stage 2 download from HD to match the setup. Its been 7 months and its been flawless for 6k miles. Lots of reasons why I went this route, however I can tell you this is now a very fast, reliable and cool running bagger. Plus it sounds great without being obnoxious.
To answer your question, you would need some kind of an ECM recalibration if you went with the SE A/C and V&H pipes. If you changed the headers, the O2 sensors would just plug into the new headers made for your bike.
I did the stage 1 om my 2010 Limited and it made a difference in power. I spent less than 1500 since I bought the FuelMoto stage1 and installed myself. With the stage1 my EITMS would kick in on a day in the 80's while at a light. The big boost is when I put Woods T-555 cams and had it dynoed. I was a light today for 3 minutes in 95 degree weather and the EITMS never came on. The bike dynoed 92hp and 106tq and I can tell the difference in a big way.

My bike runs cooler, smoother, and performs much better than stock. I took off the heat shields as they're not needed (not to mention ugly). By freeing up the restrictive pipes, A/C, and adding a tuner there are only positives (less the costs of course) in your bikes performance.
$325 TD exhaust (eBay deal) + $200 breather + $150 tuner = $675 of the best $$$ spent making my bike run better, cooler & sound like a HD. I say do some research, buy the parts & self-install. Don't forget the $60 service manual for reference...

I bought my '11 FLHTK last August. I installed Screamin' Eagle Street Performance Touring mufflers on it and loved the sound. Then I installed Vance & Hines Dresser Duals (aka: "true duals"), which don't have a cat converter in them and they use the stock O2 sensors. The install was easy and I LOVE the results. Much less heat on the right side without the cat, better sound without the cat/with the true duals, and a crisper throttle response. I left the stock intake in place and I installed Nightrider's VIED's. I set the VIED's at the mid-point which is around 14.0 AFR, according to the instruction sheet that came with them. I purposely did not consider a "download" because I (a) dont' want to set the rev limiter any higher or jack with the timing, and (b) I trust my research regarding the Delphi EFI system on the new bikes (which adjusts air-fuel ratio to accomodate changes in exhausts and intakes)...plus some things the techs at my dealer told me, which confirms the above. My bike runs great, my decel popping what so ever, plugs look nice and clean (light tan color) and the engine just purrs. The ability to make exhaust/intake changes without ECM remapping pertains to the '07 and later TC engines, according to what I've learned. Anyway....long story short, simple, well-planned modifications can be done yourself for not a lot of money.
SE A/C, SE Fatshotz and SE 255 cams...SE Stage II HD FACTORY DOWNLOAD and as stated several times all parts are registered with HD and covered under full factory warranty. Work must be done within 60 days of purchase. Best money I ever spent with a peice of mind. Loads of power, no need to downshift to 5th when passing.
