This happened to me with my '11 SG last Friday. Filled up with gas, started her up and everything seemed fine except for a fast idol of about 1400 RPM. Twisted throttle and max was 2200 RPM. Pushed it out of the gas bay and called Harley. Service Mgr said let's try this. Turn off run/stop switch, hold throttle all the way backwards, cycle ignition off/on 3 times, wait 30 to 60 seconds and then start it up. It worked and no further problem in over 700 miles during the weekend. What a relief. Ride safe.
Your problem (in case the Svc Mgr, didn't inform you) was that you apparently turned off the bike with the throttle twisted, because the solution you mention is what fixes this problem. The TBW learns a new position if you cut the bike off a few times with the throttle twisted (even slightly). So what you did by holding the throttle all the way back and tuning on and off the ignition several times was to allow it to learn the correct position once again. To prevent this problem, (some may scoff) but I suggest you turn off the key switch with your right hand, this makes sure that you do not accidentally have the throttle twisted and the bike will not learn the wrong position this way.
Although it could be his problem also, it is unlikely, as most of the time the symptom is a high idle, and he didn't mention a high idle.
