I have an 03 injected Road King that pops thru the intake sometimes at idle but mostly just off idle like when pulling away from a stop. At times it will do it between gear changes only at low rpm. The bike has been sitting for a while and I just bought it but it only has 1600 miles on it. It appears to have a stage 1 download as well as K&N air filter and Screaming Eagle slipons. I put a Fuelpak tuner on it in an attempt to fix the problem. Problem may have lessened but is still there. It is really anoying. The bike runs great other wise. I have also added a fuel cleaner like Seafoam to the fuel trying to clean any residual bad fuel it may have in it. Just as a side note, there is quite a bit of popping from the exhaust on decel as well. Seems more than usual to me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I see quite a few posts on the subject but not many concrete solutions.
wasn't much gasmin when I got it. Filled it up and added this fuel conditioner the local bike shop recommended. just filled it up again and added more conditioner and road it about 100 miles. seemd to run ok and then started doing it more often. I agree though, I could be the fuel.
Thanks again
If you haven't run much fuel through it I wouldn't start changing anything yet. Run the tank as low as you dare or siphon it empty and fill with GOOD 91 or 93 octane gas with no aditives or cleaners and see how that goes. I run an 02 RK with same set up and can tell when I get old gas by the cough and pop you talk about. I am assumeing you are fuel injected as you have a fuel pak.
+1 on checking for intake and exhaust leaks. I get decel popping. What causes it on mine is exhaust flange nuts at the heads work loose over time, tighten them up and popping is gone. Also found loose bolts on air filter backing plate once. Give all your intake and exhaust connections a check, may correct the problem. Good luck!
sounds lean check for intake leaks and if all is ok u need a better fuel tuner. also another way to check for intake leaks is start the bike let it idle and spray some wd 40 or berrymans b12 at the intake . if the motor idles up where u spray theres your leak good luck.
I don't know for sure, but I am kinda leaning towards the contaminated fuel theory. I have read several posts where they talk about fuel quality causing this problem. I will try running it real low and starting over with known good gas. I have looked in the tank with a flashlight and it looks clean but I still think there could be some bad gas in there. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated
