Rebuild or have rebuilt locally. Most new units are built in China and will not hold up as long.
I work for a large builder here in the states and we have done tons of them. You can do it yourself if you can find parts. If you were stateside I would have you send it to me. We just did two this week. charged $70for one and $60 for the other. Give big breaks to riders.
Can I please have you email ...mill.i mean have two starter I trying to rebuild need advice ..or maybe send to u for rebuild ..gone through two not lookin to buy third ..custom softail with s&s 113 no compression fitting so ...u know rest thanks
p learn help need starter rebuilds have gone through two not looking to buy third..I have custom softail ..
Just had my starter go out on my 08 king. Sounds very similar to what you have and I just replaced the starter clutch assembly for 80.00. I am guessing that this is a known problem due to excessive kickback from the crappy stock compensator. Yes I also changed out the comp with a SE one to hopefully eliminate a failed starter again in the near future
One more All ***** starter drive satisfied customer. 08 Road King got SE compensator and starter drive at 15,000 miles, now above 85,000 and everything remains good. If you do it yourself, there is a ball bearing that goes at the end of one of the shafts, I don't remember which one. It is easy to overlook. Someone was nice enough to give me the tip years ago, now it is my turn. Pay attention to the exploded view drawings.

New they can be pricey.
where are you located. I 2007 dyna. Starter just went out
My guess is the starter clutch which is actually a sprag clutch grease has dried out and the rollers are stuck in the up position. Normally, at your miles, may be a good idea to replace all.
If not, replace the brushes, contact and regrease with proper high-temperature grease. Take the starter drive apart first and also look at the planetary gears before buying parts. Finding correct grease may be a problem.
Make sure your battery is really good. Is the starter gear actually jumping all the way into the ring gear?

be VERY careful inside the primary with the battery connected, it is more than easy to activate the starter by manipulating the shaft.
the chain turns and maybe your fingers get plucked off.
seen it.

GOOD advice here!
I have a friend who lost his pointer finger by screwing around with the starter shaft without disconnecting the battery.
He tried to get the shaft unstuck, and as soon as it came unstuck, it kicked in and mashed his finger into the gears. That must have HURT like hell! Sheared it pretty much right off.
Not one of his finest moments..

I just saw your post. The starter on my 2008 FLHTPI just took a dump...just spins. This is the second one as it was replaced by the dealer in 2010. Would be interested in seeing if you can rebuild it and cost. I'm just outside of Phila PA. Thx
