We rode up to Maine for a long weekend, halfway up the speedo started dropping out. Then the it went completely dead. I took the speed sensor out that night cleaned it off. The next day it was working until the bike warmed up it started jumping then went out. So when I got it home took the fairing off and tested all the wires and even the charging system. Everything checks out. Are the speed sensors a problem? I don't want to blow $80 if its not the problem. The directional cancel stops working and the radio fades in and out when the speedo's jumping around.

 

I'd bet it's the sensor, sometimes cleaning them will last a couple of months, and sometimes only a couple of hrs.
They've really gone up in price. The last one I replaced, I could swear was only forty something.

 

Check your battery connections. It may sound odd but that's where you start with voltage fluctuation issues.

 

Speed sensor...that's the same thing that happened to mine a couple years ago. We cleaned it the first time and replaced it a week later. Haven't had a problem with it since.
