Default Newby Questions

Hey all. I have been riding my whole life (don't ask what that means in years) but believe it or not am on my first Harley. I really hated to admit that but it proves you can teach an old dog....

So I have a question I could not find an answer for searching the forums.

Both my wife and I are suffering with the heat on the right side of the bike. I am considering keeping my stock, quiet mufflers and going with something like V&H Dresser Duals or Khrome Werks X-Under headers to get the pipe away from my wife's leg. If I did ths and kept the stock mufflers would I need a tuner for fuel modification?

Is there any kind of heat shield for the passenger board that might help? How about passenger footboard extensions?

Thanks!

I put the Kuryakyn adjustable pegs on for my wife, that helped because she can move her legs up. Just recently I took my lowers off, did a stage 1 added an oil cooler and put on one of Captn. Itchs crotch cooler, my bike runs better cooler and there is a lot more cooler air on her legs.

Get ceramic coated head pipes. You can keep your stock slip ons or change them in the future, whatever.

I've got Rush True Dual headers that are ceramic coated. I know Fuel Moto has some that are ceramic coated but apparently only '09 and up, and possibly S&S does too, maybe others. The ceramic coating lowers the radiated heat from the pipe by as much as 300 degrees!!! They make a HUGE difference.

Make sure you richen your mixture with IED's or a tuner and you will be good to go. (Edit: Oh I see your bike specs now. Probably got a carb. Even easier to get the fuel mixture where you need it!) You won't need a crotch cooler or other extraneous stuff.

I doubt you'll need a tuner or re-jet with only a head pipe change.

If you buy headers that don't have ceramic coating, (I wouldn't) find someone in your area who can coat them. They should be coated inside and out. Heck you could check around first and maybe just get your stock pipes coated. Might save some coin...

Anyway, other than richening your mixture, ceramic coating is THE BEST way to mitigate heat IMHO. Your not deflecting it. Your sending it straight out the back of the motorcycle!

May I ask what kind of footwear your wife uses when on the bike? Proper high cut riding boots may just be the ticket.

Okay Capt Itch, this is your moment, jump in here.

Just in case he does not see the post. Check out the crotch coolers. They help a lot.

In addition to the comments above, Footboard extensions will also help. You can extend them out 3/4 or 1in. for the rider and passenger which will allow more air between Your legs and exhaust. They work great and are more comfortable. You can get them at Soos-Kits.com. Check them out, money well spent!

I was afraid someone would ask... I can tell you they are not boots and I am sure you are correct... but not likely an option.

Perhaps you could win her over by pushing the safety aspect. Mangled up feet are not a pretty sight and usually preventable just by wearing good riding boots. A few pictures off the internet may convince her.

Worth a try... honestly I like the looks of a lady in some good riding boots too... but I guess that's a whole different subject.
