Default Windshields: Polycarbonate vs. Acrylic

Learn About Polycarbonate and Acrylic

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a good read of these two materials. And why the Acrylic windshields are listed as " Impact Modified ".Technical and long but well worth your time. I was worried about the " Acrylic " windshield until I read this article and read about the " Impact Modified Acrylic ".
A special high cost acrylic called Impact Modified Acrylic. This form of acrylic is DOT approved for windshields.

Interesting reading. Explains a couple thing about Lexan windscreens that always puzzled me (but never quite enough to bother digging to find an answer )

I'd still go with Polycarbonate

+1 on the Polycarbonate.

I have seen too many Acrylic and even Modified Acrylic shields crack.

I installed a so called "Impact modified acrylic" on a bike several years ago and was very careful with the install. The bolts were torqued in the sequence and to the specs of the windshield manufacturer.

About a month later two cracks appeared from the mounting bolts. I called the company and was pretty much told, "were sorry you must have installed it improperly, we will be happy to sell you another one". My reply, NO THANKS.

Since then I only use Polycarbonate, and have not had an issue since.

+1 on the Polycarbonate. It cost more, but well worth it.

I don't believe after market windshield manufacturers use Impact Modified Acrylic.

Lexan polycarbonate is 20X more impact resistant than acrylic and suppost to be the best windshield material for motorcycles. They even mention Harley motorcycles in this article.

I have a Longrides shield....just got it...19" recurved....and I am impressed even though it is "modified acrylic"......I believe it will suit me well and perform well, plus their customer service is great.

that being said....

Been using Lexan in different industries over the years and it is the best: easy to work with, tuff, flexible, resists cracking, lasts long.

only downside to lexan...it's more expensive.
