Default 1000 mile first service ?

what all is normally included and what should it cost???? i'm an auto dealer diesel tech and im sure more than competent to do most of the services but should i allow my selling dealer to do this so all well with extended warranty???? thinkin about doing all the fluid services myself and letting them do the other stuff???? whatever that is??? when is sterring head adjustment due??? i have a real issue allowing someone other than me doing any service on my stuff as i dont wholeheartedly trust that they will do all they say the will????/ thanks..........................tim

Used to have that same feeling when I took my 7.3l ford f250 in for repairs. Your owners manuel will give you tips on what's needed and when.

Default 7.3

i can understand your feelings!!! i have seen way to many hacks come through dealers service dpartments and it always makes everyone in the dealer suspect?? especially when concerns arent handled promptly and approprietly........at least when the vehicles have 4 wheels its a little less worry.... btw do you still have the 7.3?????

Type " Harley 5000 mile service PDF " in Google. It'll lead you to a single sheet of paper that lists everything to check on all services. ( 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, 7,500, 10,000 and repeat.) Quite convenient.

I too, am a auto tech, (mercedes), but I let the dealer do the first one, just for warr. sake. after that, did all my own service/maintenence work , if anything went wrong after the 1k, could always document the first service on the dealer, after that make yourself a work order for records, that it was performed by somebody (you) and you're covered

You should have no problems doing it yourself.Just save reciepts and have a checklist.
Will not void warranty.

Cost depends on where you live and if you have a dealer or indy perform the service.

You can do the service yourself. Get the Service manual. It will pay for itself after 1 service!

Default im certain

i can perform the work just was curious if anyone had any negative reports from doing the service themselves??? i know when it comes to where i work it always helps to at least patronize the dealer to some point... whether its buying parts from them or the occasional service just to keep a relationship with them.... price at my dealer is approx $300..... that sound right??? i would probably do the engine oil and trans fluid change myself but let them do primary maybe but may do that myself as well... just dont know if much else is done besides that on first service?????

Usually the dealer has somebody that does nothing but fluid changes. That person is not usually a certified mechanic. I've heard tales of improper plug insertion causing problems. I do my own service other than replacing tires or something major. I have had good and bad experiences with my local dealer. It depends on what day it is and how much your comfort is with trusting them...

Just did my 1,000 Mi. service on my 2011 SG. All fluid changes, I used Amsoil MC 20-50 in all holes. Greased the zerk fitting on the steering head bearings (mercruiser w/teflon LOL what I had), Adjust clutch and lube cable/lever shaft , adjust drive belt, Tighten engine mount bolts and rear frame critical bolts. I did by the HD manual which was well worth the money. I torqued all bolts to spec with a torque wrench. Everything went well need some advice on the clutch adjustment because the manual says to turn the clutch basket screw in unti lightlyl seated and out 1/2 to 1 turn. I stated at 3/4 but did it over at 1/2 out because it felt better in the lver to me.
I'll spend the money I saved on accessories. I say do it your self, go slow and if unsure ask the guys on this forum. Oh yeah buy the tools you will need like A drive belt tension guage, 36mm socket and wrench for the rear axle and a circlip removal tool for the clutch lever pin greasing. Also a torque wrench.

If I left something out let me know please.
