Check your speedometer sensor. They get shavings on them Wipe clean and retry it. If that doesn't help replace it. Be carefull when removing as there is an o ring that seals it. This easy an easy fix..

+1 /\ your speed sensor is a magnetic sensor in the trans. Pull it and clean it off. My sensor went bad after a gear in the trans hit it then it leaked oil into the conector and went funny on me. If thats not it pull all the plug connectors assosiated with the speedo and use some dioelectric silicon in each connection.

what type of spark plug wires do you have? if you have braided cables or any other cables with a metal jacket, switched them out for normal stock cables. there's been a problem with metal and braided jacket cables which cause the exact problem you are describing.

the spark plug cables are stock. also i had washed the bike before this started and ran the battery down trying to get it to start and had to jump the bike to get it stated. took it to the dealer and ran a charging system on the battery and it was fine. could jump starting the bike caused the problem?

I had similar problems the first 3 years I owned my 05. The dealer and myself tried sensors and then out of frustration they put a new speedo in. That didn't do it either. I cured the problem when I discovered a bad ground inside the fairing while I had it apart. I scaped the powder coat off and used a star washer and it's been fine for the last 3 years. It might be worth checking.
