The front mounting point on that failed mount is very thin. I have a chrome one from MB and the front mounting point has much more metal, no way it would bend like that. Did they change the way they made them? I bought mine almost 2 yrs ago.

sublime_ac,

Are you back from Sturgis? Do you still have the failed rack? If so, please post some pics of the rack, including the front mounting points that failed. If you can include a ruler or some other reference object, it will allow comparison to the other racks offered by FBI and MB as explained below.

Also, what docking hardware did you use? In your third picture, I don't see the rubber docking point HD uses, and I don't recognize what's there as being the aluminum bushing Gilbos offered?

Looking at the third picture you posted, the front mounting point doesn't look like the front mounting point on the rack I purchased from MB. I'll snap a picture or two of the rack I have to permit comparison of what I have with what you have.

Glad the failure didn't result in more serious consequences for you, and hope you'll take the time to pose the additional pictures requested.

Thanks.

Carl

Here's a picture of the MB rack taken when it was installed a year or so ago:

http://

The tour pak is currently off the bike so I'll take some pictures and post them in the next day or so, including some measurements of the forward docking points to permit comparison to the rack that failed on the OP's bike.

Prior to the rack shown in my first picture, I had an earlier version of the MB rack and here's a picture of it from a similar perspective to the first picture:

http://

The two racks are easily distinguished: the later version has vertical sides (i.e. width of the mounting surface of the rack is the same as the width of the rack since the sides are vertical), while the earlier version has a narrower width for the mounting surface because of the angled sides of the rack. (The pictures by 131Tman appear to show the earlier version rack.)

Also, the rear mounting points of the eaerlier version rack use a different latch than the newer version which appear to be stock HD latches.

Hopefully the OP will post some additional pictures and/or dimensional information.

Carl

Like I said I got the rack from Brian at BRC, I thought they were one and the same but after talking to Nick at Milwaukee Baggers I learned that they were different companies. Whether the unit sold by Milwaukee Baggers differed from the unit I got from Brian I am not sure. If you send me your email address I can send pics of the failed rack, which unfortunately is now at the local dump.

The OP says that his rack used a modified shock bolt as the front mount. That would put the mounting point farther forward than the HD pass backrest mount which is to the rear of the shock bolt. Also the OPs rack looks long and thin in the area of the front mount. The later MB rack and mine are beefier in the front mounting area. Wonder if he got some kind of prototype from BRC?

Nice "catch" on the "modified shock bolt as the front mount." You are correct that the MB rack uses an HD docking point aft of the shock bolt.

I agree with your observation about the difference in the front mounting points; the pics I posted seem to show the earlier version to be less beefy in the material used on the sides of the rack overall and at the forward and rear mounting points particularly.

I took the OP's offer to email me pics; I'll post them when I get them.

sublime_ac,
what year is your bike? My guess is its later then a 2009........

If this is the case, it would be the reason why the front point was a modified shock bolt.

Im just pointing this out so we are all on the same page....

I have a 2006 so Im not 100% sure on how the 2009 and up mounts work.
