Unhappy How much for a complete motor rebuild?

I was just told some costly news. I had a noise in the motor develope 3000 mile's after a 107 kit was installed. Before that, the bike ran great! It still did except for the noise that we thought was piston slap. Turn's out that the rod's were loose so I HAVE TO REPLACE THE CRANK! I was wondering what would be a fair price for a job of this magnitude. Anybody have an idea? This would involve splitting the cases. Installing the lefty bearing, new upgraded crank + all gasket's and fluid's.

DAMN dude that sucks. darkhorse seems to be the most recommended on this forum. hear they do good work.

just think...get a bulletproof bottom end and then get some stage II heads from jamie and you've got their new Hellraiser 107!

That bites!

If you cannot do any of the work yourself, plan on spending about $4000 or more depending on the shop's hourly rate.

But if you can pull the motor and send the bottom end to Darkhorse, they will split the cases, repair (if possible) the crank, replace bearings, reassemble, and then ship it back to you for less then half that price (of course that depends on any other issues they may find in the process).

Then you just need to purchase a complete gasket set and oils...price depending on your model and where you buy them.

Good luck!

In my opinion (and remember opinions are like azzholes) that with the less than desirable cranks on the HD's, especially after the dumping of the forged cranks in 02 I would never, ever bump my engine beyond it's limits without having the crank reworked. In my opinion, a 103 is as high as I would go on a 96 motor without crank work. I know they say it can handle a 107, but not for me. Not that helps you now.

You are looking at about $1800 to R/R the motor; say 24 man hours at $75 per; $200 for gaskets and oil; $150 to ship lower unit to Hoban Brothers; $1200 or thereabouts to rebuild crank, replace bushings and bearing, rod damage will add to that. Assuming there is no other damage, $3500 is probably the low end and it could run up to $4000 per Pine Tree's post.

Spend another $2000 and you can install a 120" crate motor.

If I had only 3000 miles on a new 107 kit, I'd have some serious questions for the guy who did the work! Why did it only last 3000 miles?

I think I'd go somewhere else to have some other mechanic do the work to correct it. Hell, I can put on 3000 miles in 4 or 5 days.

Sorry about your luck with the old build. I have about 13,000 on my 107 build now with stock crank. In my world I would never build it back to a 107. Since you have to split the cases and do crank work I would go 113/117 or get the se crate motor. Either way nothing is really that cheap of and option but good luck with the repair

If you are spending close to $4000 I think I would spend a little more and get the 120r. Just a thought.

Why. So Hobans can literally steal it like they stole my father's 42 knucklehead...
