A friend of my and I are working on his elctra or ultra classic bike...he didn't run it for over 2 years. We are not getting a spark. the battery is fully charged. the two wires to the coil turn on when I use a voltmeter...they both turn on when we turn the ignition switch on. When we crank the engine there is no spark from the coil...could it be a faulty ignition coil or module...how do we test these? We need help...my friend has not riden his bike in a while and we want to see him get back on it...thanks for any advice..
when testing for spark, you HAVE to have resistance in the connection between the plug wires and the motor, if that's how you are testing. ( otherwise you can damage the module)
The best way is to just put a plug in the boot, and ground the side of the plug to the cyl. head- look for spark at the tip.
Remember BOTH plugs should fire at the same time on a Harley with stock ignition system
the sensor is under the nose cone cover, the module is under the left side cover, the coil is under the tank
IF you think the ignition system is shot, but do not know how to trouble shoot diagnose and find a fault, and decide to replace parts- the Crane Hi4E system works great on those bikes ( that's what I had on my '95 )
and you are sure the carb is not gummed up, fuel is being delivered?
( oh and there is an Evo forum here- might get some real expert advice there)
