Default (5) Primary Torx Screws

OK.....I'm at 4k miles on my 2011 RGC, so I changed the Oil and Tranny fluids. Then I intended to change the Primary fluid, but the (5) torx screws will not budge with my drill on max power. One screw even started to strip. Is this some kind of friggin joke from Harley?

So now I have to bring my bike, my primary fluid, and my new primary gasket to the stealer and pay them 30 minutes of labor to remove (5) friggin screws. I definately want to trash these (5) torx screws for some regular hex screws. Has anybody done this? Any "specific" recommendations?

Use a hand impact. A lot of folks swap them out for allens. I don't have a problem with the torx so I leave them on.

An impact driver might do it or tapping a T27 a little to break it free.

Sometimes it is easy to mistake a T25 for a T27. A T25 appears to fit and will turn screws that aren't too tight. Are you sure you're using a T27?

I swap mine out to allens so i have fewer tools to carry when touring.

power tools are kinda good for running screws in and out, but you should certainly use hand tools when starting a fastener and tightening it to torque value.

tooth paste is handy to get extra grip for the tool on the head ( well, valve lapping paste--- but even valve lappers will use toothpaste).

Make sure your torx driver is the correct size.

buy a cheap easy out kit and smack it in there and remove them all. some seem to end up a heck of a lot tighter than others. mine are ok but a buddy down the street stripped out 3 of them. we took them all out and put in regular allen heads like Dawg suggested.

Yes.....its a T27. My next size up in my kit is a T30.

Does anybody happen to know the specs on the factory torx screw? The Length and the Thread?

Had same problem with my timer cover when I wanted another. I drilled off the heads of the ones that were hosed up and once all were out and cover removed I was able to get on the threads with vise gripe and get them out.

Though shalt not use power tools on a bike.... Bad on you!!!!

Never , ever use power tools on any bolt on your bike. You have no control over the speed, that's why they stripped. Cheap torx bits can cause this too. Best to use a 1/4" ratchet with an adapter to put the torx bit in. Besides you need to torque them down anyway in sequence so an inch pound torque wrench is a requirement unless you have a calibrated arm.

One of mine started to strip doing the 5k service until I went to the hardware store and picked up some torx sockets for the ratchet. Looked like the old bolts had that darn HD white thread lock on them whatever that stuff is. Once I got them out replaced with new chrome HD bolts with blue locktite. Still the T27, might check the local Ace Hardware store sells chrome allen heads for next service.

i have a torx driver that has about a 4 inch shaft and a handle like a screwdriver. it even has a hex near the handle to put a wrench on for extra torque. it is made by snap-on. i stripped many on the derby cover on my old evo, but since i got this tool never a problem. and as others have said a 25 seems to fit but it is wrong some of these screws seem to be very soft, i keep an extra set in my toolbox. not sure on the length it is about 5/8 of an inch. they are a 1/4-20 thread
