Hi all, new to this forum. Have '11 FLHTK for a couple months now, 6K on the clock and she runs great. Been riding many years, many different bikes, second HD. I usually do my own wrenching and am not a newbie in that regard. Anyway, I did the 5K service and all was well but I just dropped in a K&N filter (OEM style) and the bike doesn't start as readily as it did before the switch. Before, it was one cylinder crank over and off she went but now it takes another crank or so. Same hot or cold. I've used K&N for years in all my vehicles but am thinking of putting the OEM one back in to see if that's the problem. Just wondering if anyone else has had starting issues after the switch. I have not touched the exhaust or done any other engine mods...don't plan on it either. I've heard of the TB "O" rigns getting leaky and causing driveability issues but the bike runs and idles fine..just the starting that has me concerned. Thanks!
cycle the ignition switch three times waiting about 10 seconds at each position.
Each time the key is turned on, the throttle plate will open slightly, then close again. This is
a normal IAC learn function. i copied this it MIGHT help, to do this the run switch must be on, give it a try, never heard of this happening but ya never know.
Guessing here.... its possible that the increased amount of airflow from the K&N is causing a very lean AFR at startup. Put the stocker back on & if it goes back to one turn starting, Id guess thats it.
Thanks all...as I described, the bike is all stock except for the AC as far as the engine is concerned. New K&N filter so it should have been oiled properly from the get-go. I'm sort of thinking along the lines that a less free-flowing AC such as stock would act as a choke of sorts compared to the K&N and thus allow a richer mix into the cylinder at startup. It's not lean anywhere else...no pinging or anything. I think I'll let it be for a while to see if the ECM learns the new AC is in town and then just go back to the stock one. Thanks for the responses.
