Have a 103 with pipes,255 cam, AC and PCV. Removed the PCV to check for a O2 sensor issue. Connected the O2 sensors back up with stock EMC. Took for a test ride and bike still ran great through all RPM's. No hesitation, popping. Question is why wasn't there a difference with the PCV removed. Will there be a problem with running lean or rich? All comments welcomed
Well, according to some things I've read here and read. This site would lead one to "believe" we don't need no stinkin' tuner, at least if all you are doing is mufflers and intake; and don't mind running at the factory AFR. I'd say your stock ECM made sure the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR) was within its' limits and there for the bike ran fine. Had you been riding a carburetated bike that may have not been the same. The only real issue with the stock ECM is running in the EPA required lean AFR. Our tuners are all set to run at a richer AFR for cooling and horsepower and some allow for timing adjustments too. Even after reading the nightrider stuff, I'll stick to my PCV w/Autotune. But someday it would be nice to see a dyno comparison of Stage 1 bikes using stock ECM and our beloved tuners.
If Harley downloaded a stage 2 program you may not notice alot of difference but if they didn't the bike will go lean and run hot. get in some stop and go traffic on a hot day and I bet you'll notice a difference.
The PCV alone doesn't use any o2 sensors. It uses o2 eliminators to bypass the o2 sensors. If you add the Autotune kit to the PCV it replaces the stock narrowband o2 sensors with wideband sensors. And still uses the eliminators on the stock wireing plugs.
I just unplug my 02 sensor wires under the side cover and leave the sensors themselves in the pipe. If I ever have a problem with the PCV on the road I can plug them back in and get home. I'm only running a Stage 1 air box and new exhaust. I am not using auto tune, just the basic PCV.
