Default 2009 mufflers on a 2012?

I have a real clean pair of(80721-09) screaming eagle street performance mufflers that I removed from my ultra. HD catalog as well as web site list these as for 09 and later touring with a 96ci engine. They are not listed as fitting or for use on 103ci bikes. Must be because of exhaust being redsigned for the cat bikes, different muffers are required according to HD. The mufflers will physically fit, so what would be the problem too restrictive or too loud? Maybe would have some effect on the exhaust sensors? Safe to use them or not? Your thoughts please

my guess is they'll be too quiet. in 2010 when HD started putting cat's in the headpipe, they had to redesign the mufflers because the cats ate up so much sound that with the 2009 mufflers the bike was just too quiet. As for restrictions...I don't know. Echo chambers aren't necessarily more of less restrictive from year to year, but designed to surpress/accentuate different frequencies.

I HAVE read that the 2009 mufflers are significantly heavier than the 2010+ mufflers so take from that what you will.

Just put them on and see if you like them - there is no "technical" reason that they would be worse for the motor.

as touched on above, the catalytic converter in the head pipes is fairly restrictive, which allowed H-D to have less restrictive mufflers on 2010 and up bikes- while still being compliant. Later muffler are "more open" than 2009 and earlier.

Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking the same way, most likely would be no or little difference in sound compared to the OEM mufflers on the bike now.

I have a set of 2008 SE mufflers off a 2008 Ultra Classic SE. The mufflers have cats in them. Don't know about the 2009 but they may have cats in them also. Friend has a set of 2010 SE mufflers on his 2008 Ultra Classic with the S&S head pipe and they are more quite than his stock mufflers were.

I have those on my 2010 ultra with a 96. They work fine. Put them on right after I bought the bike in 09 before anything else was available. They were not much louder than stock but did have a little deeper and throatier sound I'd say. I changed the baffles out to cycle shack and that opened them up some more. Hope this helps.

FWIW, I put a set of Fatshotz on my '11 Ultra..They are straight through pipes, no restriction whatsoever. So, I think that the comments on the CAT are correct...they made the newer pipes less restrictive due to the CAT in the headpipe. My stock mufflers I removed were not straight through and had some restriction in them, but the SE Fatshotz are straight through...They sound great BTW
