In the early 70's at least one of the metric manufacturers designed a kickstand that required the bike to be leaned to the right past vertical to kick it up. Several very serious accidents were caused by riders forgetting to kick up the stand, riding off, and being thrown to the right by the stand dumping the bike often times with serious injuries. The metric manufacturers first designed in a kick stand safety switch to eliminate this accident potential and eventually redesigned all kickstands to snap up automatically if mistakenly left down.

Swomack: if your dealer did say "when you buy a Harley you should already know how to ride. That's why they don't have jiffy stand or start in gear switches" I'd look for a new dealer. As GUNRUNNER mentioned in an earlier post, the '07's have an "in-gear lock out swith."

Just the facts.

LOL... youse guys!!

The in-gear/clutch lever starter interlock on my '07 is perfect logic IMO... but a jiffy stand interlock would just be WRONG. It would screw up my "routine" and my warm-ups and all.

And... ain't it sweet how a big vtwin sits there idling on the jiffy and HUMPS?!

Do you think if harley comes out with this the switch would be chrome? I can see it now $199.00 black or $499.00 chrome
So if the MoCo does scan this forum from time to time, it is inevitable that they'll pick up on this idea... and it'll have a regularly scheduled service interval at $79/hr minimum 1 hour.

Might be a neat idea to some folks, not something I would ever want - although I might know somebody that may have tried to ride off with their jiffy stand deployed (Harley parlance for kickstand/sidestand for you nu-bees) they were either hotdogging or had one too many sasparillas and deserved the embarrasment it caused... now if they'd been unable to start said scooter their friends would have been robbed of years of good natured ribbings.

I've had a few moments where I didn't pull the clutch, and was in gear. Just be ready to move with a buckin bronco. Took me by xurpise as well. Now that I am used to it, no bigee, but I was shocked. I guess harley has never been sued for that...

During my Shop days we serviced alot of metric bikes. Often they would come in because the bike had starting problems or would die when it was put into gear with the stand up & clutch in. .. about 30% of the problems were due to very cheap ( plastic) kick-stand or clutch lever safety switches that came out of adjustment, broke or filled up with road crap.

We fixed so many we made our own by-pass test shunts to over ride the system. Often the owner would request that we eliminate the switch all together. But for those that wanted it replaced, that little switch can cost close to $30+ labor on some bikes.

My one major complain about metrics in general, is that they have too many gizmo type little switches, relays and such all in the bike. Often the repair estimate on a metrics electrical problems will be high.

If you want to see an electrical nighmare.. check out a GL1800 Goldwing. After you spend 45 mins removing the body work you're faced with a series of 24ga wires running all over the place. Because of all the wires & relays ...We jokingly called it a "Civic on 2 Wheels"

Harleys are big boy toys. If you can't deal with it...well thats why there are other companies that make motorcycles.

I have a 2009 street glide and had a problem when the kickstand safety switch wire was grounded to the frame causing the bike to go into limp home mode. The dealer said only the police bike have the safety switch but all touring models have the wire in the harness. seem like you could get the switch if you wanted it. I have forgot mine before and was lucky to hear it before it caused any problem.

Harleys sold in some foreign markets have the kickstand switch as standard on all models - likely due to regulations in those countries.
