I am thinking of upgrading to a newer bike soon. I am trying to find out if there are any significant changes between the 09's and 10's. Right now I am looking at either a 2009 or 2010 Ultra. From what I have been able to find out, they are very simaler bikes but I may be missing something. I currently own a 07 ultra but i like a few of the features of the newer bikes. My riding buddy has a 2010, and on the weekend we switched bikes for a couple of hours so I know what they feel like. I have been very happy with my 07 but I like the bigger gas tank on the newer bike and I find 6th gear to be much more useable than on my 07.
Biggest difference was a catalytic converter came out on the 2010. The 10' has different size and position 02 sensors like the new bikes. Also helical cut gear was on the 10' eliminating 5th gear whine. Yes, you will find the gearing changes made in 09' to be better suited to the 6th gear than your 07'. There were some other small changes.
09, unless you want to buy some Vance & Hines Power duals, or something like that, to get rid of the cat & heat. 09 if you just wanna do slip-ons for pipes.
Thanks for the responses. I thought the CAT came out in '10 but was not sure. Are most people removing them? Do the 09s still have the 5th gear whine like the 07s? That is another thing that bothered me about my 07.Any other differences to be aware of?
to compare model years, google for the "model year technical forum" .pdf
example:
2009 model year technical forum pdf
2010 model year technical forum pdf
you can then read the documents and track changes from year to year.
regarding the cat: it depends on the market for which the bike was destined. many riders here have US 49 State bikes and base assumptions on that (2009-no cat, 2010 cat)
CDN and California bikes may be different as may Int'l bikes. emissions, gearing, lighting etc.
regarding the "whine", you'll see some tranny changes in the tech forum pdf-
being a canadian model i wouldn't assume the '09 doesnt have a catalytic converter. the '09 manual states that california and international touring bikes have the cat. my dealer told me there was definitely a cat converter in my headpipes..... there wasn't. if not having a cat in the headpipes was one of your main reasons for going with the '09 i would pull off the right muffler and have a look just to make sure.....
