Sounds like It is going bad. Have them replace under warranty and eventually get SE comp when warranty runs out.

There is no reason why you can't have it repaired under warranty, pay the difference of the SE part out of your pocket, and have the upgrade now. If your dealer won't do that, I'd look for another dealer.

I have heard of the retaining bolt backing out on some of these.

My dealer said the extended warranty won't cover it if it's just come loose. But if parts have to be replaced it will.

I guess I need the compensator.
Primary cover gasket
Oil, and a grinder to remove the lip.

anything else.

15,000 miles, Time to service it anyway.
As a first timer you can do this job in 3-4 hours easy including the grinding, and that's taking the time for a cold drink halfway through.

Have on hand plenty of clean rags to stuff around the stator and to cover the clutch and chain with. I also used a vacuum cleaner nozzle to suck up the grinder dust while grinding.

There is an excellent write up on this job by bowa18 here:

I'm really not worried about doing the work either. It's just the matter of getting my boss to let me use my/his shop to do the work.

I'm a retired Coast Guard Chief Engineer an a certified Arctic Cat Master Tech.

But I do use my Bike for transportation to and from work, so like I said it just a matter of taking the bike down to do the work.

Yes, this my shop and yes those are motorcycle lifts with ATV Side Extensions on them.

It only does it when the motor is warm , like stopping for gas or some short stop.

Is this the retainer bolt backing off.

I guess it's time for an SE compensator.
Better do it now while you hear the noise before it comes apart and grenades......that's the noise all right...

The compensator on 07 thru 10 Softails & Touring bikes seem to be giving a lot of folks a problem and the factory has discontinued the original part which forces an upgrade to A SE part. This sounds very much like a latent defect to me especially since the original part has been discontinued!! But why not just do away with the compensator all together for fuel injected bikes??

Any good Harley dealer will install SE comp under warranty with a hundred dollars out of your pocket. Try not lugging the engine....rattle and jerk at low rpm's! SE comp....problem solved!

The compensator is def a weak point in this range of Touring models. Mine was replaced twice under warranty with no problem. It's the only trouble I've ever had with this bike ('09 Road King) in 92,000+ miles. Just normal wear n tear maintenance otherwise. Motor and trans have been flawless with no end in sight, but the compensator seems to be a design flaw of some type.
