Default Radio Issue - What to do?

Hello everyone. Just bought a 2007 Street Glide used and the radio crapped out. The radio functions fine on the screen, but no sound. The diagnostic code B2017 FL Speaker Open. I searched and did a lot of reading and it sounds like it can either be the speakers, or the radio. I'm pretty handy so I plan on taking the faring off and checking this out, but how can I tell if it's the speakers or the radio? I'd hate to send it to Iron Cross, spend $250 and find out it's a speaker issue, not the radio. I don't have any spare HD speakers to test this with (anyone on Long Island with a spare speaker wanna help a brother out? LOL)

Anyways, I looking at biketronics and I see I can get a whole system for like $550 and it will have better speakers (6.5") and a better head unit which will be less likely to crap out. If I went this route, there is no auto volume adjustment based on your speed, right? I think that would annoy me a little bit having to turn it down when I hit a red light.

Anyways, I guess the question here is, how can I figure out if it's a speaker or radio issue?

Thanks in advance for your help everyone.

It's the radio. It's happened to me on 2 different bikes.
But if you want to go to Walmart and buy some speakers to plug in, to see if they work, then take back to Walmart, that's ok too.

I know you know this but when you pull the the fairing off run the wiring from the radio to the speaker looking for pinched wires, loose connections etc.

You really need to find any automotive speaker regardless of Ohms and just plug the wiring into it and see what happens. Even if the Ohms are different, a few moments of connection time won't hurt anything.

I get that code too when I run diagnostics, but I have a Hogtunes amp inline so that code is normal when the system wiring is run through a piggyback amp.

Just keep in mind the HK system is made for 2 ohm speakers-- I wouldn't run different ohm speakers for any longer than I needed to see if you have sound. Chances are it's not the speakers, sorry to say.

Do you know if you have an amp? Having a amp will generate a speaker open code even when nothing is wrong ,as explained in this link.

I work with audio systems

ignore the suggestion that any ohms value will be ok to test. that is not good advice, and can blow a transistor in the radio's amp section
if you have a substitute speaker of the same ohms rating, you can use that.

so "open speaker"- means that the radio thinks that no speaker is connected.

it could be a wire off, it could be a blown speaker.

to test for a blown speaker, you can leave it in place, remove the wires from the back of the speaker ( noting which goes where)-- using a 9 volt battery, BRIEFLY touch the terminals to the lugs on the speaker, doesn't matter which way around.

you should hear a click sound, each time you make contact--- if not, you have a blown voicecoil in the speaker.
so replace it

if you have a nice click, then trace the speaker wires back to the radio head unit, and check to see they are connected securely--- feel the wires for any areas where the wire might have been pinched and cut inside the insulation.

hopefully you will find an easy solution.

Thanks for the help everyone. I will check these out tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed for disconnected wires or blown speakers. Otherwise, I'll suck it up and send the radio out to Iron Cross.

Potato; no amp, just the stock system.

Um, silly question but, did you check the speaker switch?

It is highly unlikely that you have blown both speakers at once, so I would rule this out right away. I do agree that you should find out what is wrong with the HK, because that is at least 300.00 in your hand towards a new head unit. So, fix it if it's practical, and sell it right away. Better sound awaits you......

Good time for audio upgrade, but if you want to stick w/stock HK system - check CraigsList, eBay, or submit "parts wanted" request on this forum. I'm sure quite a few riders upgrade their stock systems & have original(s) for sale. Good luck!
