Default Stripped threads on header O2 sensor bung...

The bung in the one 02 sensor hole started to rattle. Went to tighten and it just just spins. Treads on bung are OK, O2 sensor port on header is stripped. Tryed to JB weld it in but I guess it cant take the heat. Burnt the material right out. Any suggestions? I dont plan on ever needing the ports so I could weld it in, but looking for a easier fix. Dont want to remove headers to do this. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Was the JB weld the exhaust specific product? If not, give it a shot.

Maybe pull the O2 sensor out, put a bolt in it, then wrap with exhaust tape to hold in place.

Or, this would be a good time to buy the Fuel Moto Ceramic coated headers!!!

If you are speaking of where the bung is welded into the header pipe you could have it re-welded. A wire feed welder would do the job quickly and effectively. Remember to cover any/all areas near the welding site to provide protection from the sparks and be sure to dis-connect the negative ground cable from the battery to keep the electrical system safe from surge damage. I use to run into this type of problem ( loose bung ) in the automotive field all the time and it was a quick fix. Talk to one of the guys at your local undercar repair center, I'm sure that they could help you. Hope this helps.

The threads on the bung are good...its the threads in the head-pipe that are shot. I just used the reglar JB weld. Didnt even know there was an exhaust specific one. Will give it a shot and if not have to weld it in. Thanks for the tips guys, much appreciated.

The bung is the part welded to the header. What kind of pipes are they? I've got D&D's and the threads go into them about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. I cut them off 1/4 inch to get my O2 sensor into the pipes further. You have to make sure that you cut them square, then you need to chase the threads with an 18 mm x 1.5 thread chaser that can be had at the auto parts for about $7. You're going to have to pull your head pipes though. You're just spinning your wheels trying to fix it without doing that.

Have someone weld the threads in the bung hole up with a wire fed welder then re-tap the O2 hole to the proper thread again should be good to go.

If you are not needing O2 sensors the easiest fix is just tap it out one size larger and stick a cap in it or put a time sert in the original size in case you ever go back to using O2 sensors..
