Hey Guys First time threader so go easy on me. I resently purchased a 2007 street glide and road it to Colorado, 1700 miles into the ride I checked the oil to find it was a half quart low. Is this normal. thanks
I wouldn't worry about 1/2 a quart...I am not saying that it is normal...Just keep an eye on it...Did you check the oil before you left on your trip? did you check it with a cold engine or warm engine?...It makes a difference...Just keep an eye on it.
Are you saying you checked it before you left and after 1700 miles you are 1/2 a quart lower? If so, then that is a different issue. Could be a number of things. In my case, 2005 Ultra with 40,000 miles on it I needed a valve job. The other indication I had was she began to ping under load due to build up. She runs fantastic now.
I serviced my bike before the trip and the level was full. I did check the level with the engine warm and on the stand. I bought the bike with 7300 miles and now have 10000 miles. I thouhgt that was low miles for oil loss. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks
Mine have always made a half quart dissapear in the first feww hundred miles and never drop below that.
That is, until my last trip, my 09 needed a quart to be half quart low. Gonna keep a close check after I do the service this week.
Ya that's whats still considered within "normal" oil usage. You may have leaky valve guides... The '05 models in particular were well known for that and my '05 EGC used a quart every 3k easily.
You'll just have to keep an eye on the oil level. You'll figure out your exact usage as time goes on, but you've just got one of those motors that uses oil.
My bike runs at a tad above the "add a quart" mark. Change the oil, fill it up, ride 500 miles and it's right back at a tad above the "add a quart" mark. Never runs hotter than it should (according to the gauge), good oil pressure (according to the gauge) and I've never had a problem with it in the 30,000 miles I have put on it. Did a 95 kit with new S&S geared cams about 15,000 miles ago. I could get on it tonight, ride 100 miles, check the oil and it will be where it always is. I guess that's just where the motor wants it to be. My mechanic says everything is fine. I used to worry about it but I don't anymore. Now I worry about the Inquisition coming to get me.
