No need for sealant if you take your time and work from the front backward while tightening to the correct torque. Two helpful hints are to use SE exhaust gaskets (they seal much better) and alway use new clamps from the muffler to the pipe.
A big fat stogy works great for finding leaks. Before you install the heat shields, start the bike and blow a big puff of smoke on the joints. If there is a leak you will see it immediately. non smokers can use a stick of incense from the local quickie mart or head shop and achieve similar results.
