Default Head bearing adjustment

I figured I'd tackle the head bearing adjustment today so I removed all the lights, nacelle and other hardware. Went to undo the nut but didn't realize its an 1 1/2" So my bike sits in the garage while I try and source a giant socket.

Well I got the nut off but it looks like the upper triple tree needs to come off. It doesn't say any of that in the manual though. Any ideas?

To adjust stearing head bearings jack the front up and loosten big nut under chrome cap then loosten lower fork tube pinch bolts then tighten spanner adjuster along with tapping on top of fork tubes. As for whats to tight or loose or fall away its your call. I like mine tighter than recomended. I know its a bad discription but ask away for clarity.

OK I figured it out. I accessed the nut from underneath the triple tree using a small allen wrench and a hammer. Tapped the nut a click or two clockwise and all was good. Don't make the same mistake I did and tighten p to get the suggested 3 "back and forth" motions. If you do that then tighten the lock nut its way too tight.

No more loose steering and saved $150 from the stealer. Yeah for me!

I had mine done at 50,000 miles for $100 at a dealer in Quincy, ILL and it felt much better afterwards! Mine had been loose, so glad I took it in to have done.
