Default Wintering your bagger in self-storage unit

Anybody store their bagger in one of those self-storage units that have popped up all over the place? I am considering storing my bike, pull-behind trailer, utility trailer and riding mower over the winter months so I have some room to move around in my garage. Anybody else do this? What kind of monthly rental can I expect to pay? Good idea? Bad idea? Anybody have any good/bad experiences that they want to share?

One thing to keep in mind is moisture. If it is in there in the fall and spring months in between freezing and thawing temperatures, you will get condensation on it and it will rust. I've had storage units in the past and found tools and stuff with rust on it.

As a law enforcement officer, I can tell you first hand that I spend a great deal of time taking burglary reports of storage units. Most of the storage facilities (at least here in Indianapolis) have very poor or no security and allow access 24 hours per day (to everyone except the police). When the criminals decide to hit a particular storage facility, they can spend all night on the inside of the security gate and we (police) have no way of knowing they are in there and no way to get inside the gate. Honestly, your property would be safer sitting on the curb in front of your residence because at least someone might actually see it get stolen. We have a very slim chance of ever catching the a$$holes actually stealing from storage facilities. There are no alarms on each individual unit or the gates and fences. The surveillance cameras are horrible, especially at night which is when the crimes occur. If you decide to rent a storage unit, just make sure you have plenty of insurance cuz you will most likely need it.

I store my ski boat in a storage unit every year and never have any problems, and it's worth more than my bike. My garage isn't heated anyway, so it's the same conditions.

I have an incredibly secure, climate controlled 10' x 15' in a brand new facility that costs me $139 a month.

A ski boat isn't something we commonly have stolen here, however the stereo system's are.

Damn Guy.... Tell us how you really feel..... LOL In NY/ NJ I have not heard of many break ins (also a LEO) but I am sure they happen. I was wondering if you could store it with the gas in it and battery legally ??? I am sure that FDNY would have a problem with it.

Be Safe JIM

Good to know. I'm going to mark this one up in the "Bad Idea" category. Maybe I'd be further ahead to see about expanding my garage....

Thanks to all who responded. Good information from all. Glad I asked.

I've had a climate controlled 10 x 10 storage area for 10 years. Drive in unload, drive out regardless of weather. Accessible 6:00AM to 10:00PM ,every day of the year. Bike lives there during winter months. Manager is a great guy that takes impeccable care of the property. My garage will never be as spotless as the storage area. 2 years ago I did my handlebar swap in the storage unit.

Getting the right storage facility is the key. 10 x 10 runs approx $130/month.

I'm a big fan.

I did this last year. I found out that the contract actually had restrictions about items with gas and oil so I had to confirm with them that the bike and other motorized items had no gas and oil in it. I had a ground level drive up which was 15 X 30 ft. NYC price was 330 per month. But I had a ton of stuff in there. My unit was within a building so it was climate controlled.
