Default Info on older Electra Glides

Since my riding years are getting more limited. My ego still wants that touring bike. The funds are not there since I just bought the Deluxe. If I can find an older EG Classic or Standard, which years were better built from 2001-2005. I'm just looking for a solid older EG what I can lower and ride for a while with a radio. I know that the older cruise control kits are non existant.

A well maintained, carbed, 2002 E Glide is a very solid bike for those years you listed. upgraded wheelbearings and axles, still has the timkin bearing bottom end, good crank. If you can find one in good condition, just check the cam tensioners and run it.

I have an 04 and am doing cam tensioners right now. You can still get cruise for the older bikes,,just have to order parts instead of kit

from my perspective- there was not a great leap in technology, performance or convenience from the Evo to the TC pre about 2007.

check your local craigslist & cycletrader.com spanking deals on evo baggers are out there 6k to 8k.

worth a look, less complicated and easy to work on, lots of aftermarket parts and expertise as the evos did not suffer as many production changes from year to year as now.

I sold my '95 FLHTC last year for $6500- it was perfect, well maintained, had practical add ons, 80000 miles. I stayed on it so long because I had not seen advantages with the newer bikes until very recently- I got an 09

After riding an 18 year old Evo, I can see the major differences from then to now. totally different bike. Was there any issues with the last year of the Evo? Was that 98?

My HD guru, the guy that does the major work on my bike, says the 02 was the last good year, although my 03 has been trouble free, but I know the tensioners are going to be an issue at some point.

I've been reading these forums long enough that I could recite a list of problems with newer baggers, enough that I wouldn't be interested in one.

If you can find an 02/03 for reasonable coin grab it. If it has 25K or more on it, and the tensioners have not been upgraded, factor a grand into the price. If under 25K, assume a grand to upgrade at some point.

The '02 was one of the best years for the early TC's. You got the good crank and timkin bearings, the updated swingarm, the good axles and bearings, and if you don't get an ultra you can find them with carb's. Just watch the cam chain tensioners.

I agree about the '02 is the best of the early TC.
The only thing that still had to watch or upgraded is the Spring Loaded Cam Chain Tensioner.
The best thing to do is get the new Cam Chain Tensioner kit (25284-11) installed.
Not only does it fix the problem with the short life on the shoes, it included the better oil pump.
This will give the entire motor better oil feed.
