Default Went to R&R Cycles today and....

spent a good hour and half speaking with Reggie about a possible build that would suit me. Great guy, took me through his whole shop and explained everything. I learned a lot that I didn't know or understand before. He advised against the 26g cam that I had chosen if I go to a 95" build. The build he recommended would cost me about $2500. Based on his information I think I may just throw the 26g's in now and save up to do the build the right way and when I'm ready then change out the cams again. Learned a lot about dyno tuning also.

Why not the 26G cams with a 95" build. What was his recommendation for a cam?

Dawg:

I am lucky enough to live about 5 miles or so from R&R. Great people, and he knows his $hit!

I would (if I had the cash) have him do my ride. Guarentees over 100/100 on his setups. My brother had his shovel head bike done there, came out awesome.

If your in the area again, look me up!

Denis

I'm very interested in hearing why to avoid the 26's with a 95" build.

So many have done it with great results, it's always good to hear one's opinion against it.

Just be carefull and make sure you are both on the same page...maybe his idea of a build is 1/4 mile only?
My first builder swore by the Andrews 37 cam, which did not work for me [ can you say PINGED?[:@]].
The Andrews 26 is a great cam for most. It is far cheaper to do it right the first time.

Well I explained to him that most of my riding was 2 up and I also explained that I was torn between headwork and no headwork. I also advised him that I was going with flattop 1550's which he also advised against for what I wanted. He showed me some jugs of folks that had just done the 95 with no head work and I could see what he was talking about. He explained it like taking a piece of aluminum foil and pouring oil onto it, then put a flame under it right in the middle and the oil would thin out and move to the edges and where the flame was you would have no lubrication and wind up with scouring so to speak. He said that is like what happens when you have a 95 build and your exhaust ports aren't big enough to compensate. He also said it would be like putting bigger lungs in someone's body and keeping the same little straw to blow out of. He showed me several different heads that he has ported and ones that he welded up for various flows. He recommended to me his Stage 2 but called it a Stage 2 1/2 because of some changes-the intake would go from 1.84 to 1.90. You can see it in is online catalog. Anyhow it would consist of reworking my stock cylinders and CNC porting my stock heads, new JE dome cast pistons, his R&R 615 gear cams, S&S four gear set, cometic top end kit, cometic head gasket, compression releases, adjustable pushrods and PCIII. That package with a slight discount (because I was so charming) would cost me $2485. Then it would need tuning after. He also said that he would schedule an appointment with me when they were working on someone elses bike where I could come down and they would walk me through everything and I would watch them do someone else's bike so that I could wrench on mine knowing all the tips. He then would email me a map that would have me 90% there, but still suggested that I trailer it down to be tuned. He told me a lot about tuning whereas they would tune it to my riding style taking all the variables into account. He does a lot of work for other shops that I didn't realize either. Great guy. Like I said, I really want the full 95 build, but it will be quite awhile saving up on a cop's salary where mama will let me spend that much on the scoot[] I am debating putting the 26g in and leaving it a 88 until the time and money is right where it would be just like getting a rebuilt engine. Damn, I wish I were rich!!! Any rich folk out there want to adopt a son?
