Default 2006 or 2007 flhtcu

Looking at getting another bike. Had a head on accident on 9/27. Other driver made a left hand turn crossing into my lane. Bike was totaled. I am lucky to be alive. Glad I had my helmet on. After I receive my insurance settlement, I plan to get another bike next spring. My dream bike has always been the Ultra Classic, so if all goes well, after all the dust settles....
I was curious as to what the differences are between the '06 & '07 FLHTCU models? I noticed the '07's are 6 speeds. Are some or all '06"s six speed transmissions? Also, what other changes if any? Any replies/ info will be appreciated.

An '06 Ultra will be a 5 speed with an 88" engine, while the '07 is a 6 speed with a 96" engine. Either is is good choice. I personally would opt for the '07, but the '07's and '08's were geared fairly tall. You get used to it.

Love my 06. A 96 incher would be nice though. I've heard of PITA problems with the 07 's. First year for the 96 incher. The 88 has been around for a lot of years. Lots of time to work out the bugs. Hey, you're touring, not racing! The 06 has an "EPA friendly" cam in it, but the heads are a lot more free flowing to help compensate for this. This could be and advantage if you plan to do the cams later. I changed mine to Andrews 21's and love em. HD went to the upgraded cam tensioners after the 88, but not sure if it was for the 07's.

--- see if you can stretch the budget for an 09 or newer, the new frame is really good.
96", 6 speed, bigger throttle body from 08 on, pretty good engine management.
( I stayed on my 95 EG Classic, waiting all these years for the new models to really be worth shelling out the cash)

Cruise, security and ABS were also available on many models-GET the abs.

I figure next time some ***** pulls out in front of me, I'll let the brakes do traction control while I can try to steer clear.

and look at the Electra Glide Classic, it doesn't have the fairing lowers, badges, CB radio and rear speakers of the Ultra-- and can be a real bargain. I add fairing lowers, no need for the CB radio, and the rear speakers restrict the rear seat from holding my Tbag, which I use when touring, so I don't want speakers back there anyways

Mike

I've owned both and I actually prefer the old frame IF you add a stabilizer.

If it's strictly between 06 and 07, go for the 07 for reasons stated above.
09 would be even better. 08 up has larger gas tank. Look for deals this winter.

Don't know where you're at, but best time to buy is typically in the winter.

Little known fact. In 07 HD beefed up the swing arm and welds on the frame. Look closely at a 06 and 07 swing arm and you will notice the difference.

Would have no clue what PITA problems you are talking about on the 07. My 07 Street Glide had no issues.

To the OP, I would really consider the 08 to stay in your budget.

6 Gal Tank
TBW
ABS
IDS

All stock factory installed items.

Where all stock items. I have seen very low costs on these bike because of the frame change. But they are still solid machines.

Install the SE Aircleaner, Reflash the ECM and slip ons and it is a great dependable touring machine.

Take care and Good luck with your search.

Well one thing you didn't say is bone stock on one with a little work on it. I have an 06 with a 95" kit some head work gear drive cams and some other mods and it will out run any stock 96" with no problem. Of course a 96" with work well you see the possibilities anyway either would be great but I would op for a worked 06 over a stock 07 any day.
