Just do it!
First thing I notice when I look at others tour pack.
Makes me laugh when I look at a $30K plus bike with a set of $1.98 Home Depot hinges!!
One problem...approach the bike and try to open from the wrong side!
Like others have said, follow instructions, new drill bits and an extra set of hands!
Worth the effort just for the cosmetic improvement, even though you said you didn't want to do it for that reason. Pretty easy - but it sure made me clinch up when I was drilling...
All the comments are so true! Looks better, more heavy duty hinge, etc, etc. Also, if you have a tourpak rack with a bag on top w/ the old cheesey hinges, you can really see the hinge flex. And your tourpak flex. They truly are a big improvement over the cheesey ones.
Well worth it-- probably one of the best add ons in the HD P&A book.
Just be careful when you drill under the lid gasket material and hold it away from the bit with a small/medium metal or plastic ruler. You don't want to damage the gasket when you drill.
Best $50.00 I ever spent on an upgrade. Easy install, feels more sturdy and looks 10 times better than the POS stock hinges. I have done three sets so far, two for me and one for a bud. You won't regret it. This is one item that should come on any tour pak from the factory.
