I'm hunting right now for a Street Glide and found a 06 with less than 4000 miles on it and it has a lot of expenses that i would add already on there like Rinehart true duals, stage 1, power commander, detachable sissy/luggage and a few other little do-dads. guy wants $15,000.00. Also the color i want.
being a 88 / 5 speed. I always felt like i needed another gear on the Highway with my 03 Fatboy. After all the reading I've done I'm starting to question if the 96 / 6 speed is all it's marketed to be ????? and worth the increase in $$$ to try and find a 07 / 08 / 09 in the 15G range. With less than 4 g's on this thing and it is clean as a whistle it's very tempting to jump on this thing ? Fly by wire is a non issue with me (could care less about that) It's not having the larger engine and 6 speed is whats making me hesitant.
I would love to hear opinions of people that have experience with both.
TO O6 OR NOT ?????
An 06, for $15,000 is to much.If you could get it for about $12,000 it would be a good deal. That's an old frame & a 5 speed. No way would i pay that.Add about 3 grand to that & go buy a new 2012 the last week off Dec before the new year.Plenty deals to be had that week!!!
I bought my 07 2 years ago with 10,000 miles for 16k. A lot more extras than yours. That is way too much! Now is a great time to be in the buying market.
If thats what you want , buy it .. I wouldnt have another 6 speed if you gave me the bike with it...what a waste . unless your going to run 80 mph all day ..... The 96" is a crank breaking turd... they get EXACTLY the same mileage (I have proven it over and over ) ... I'll take the 06 over -07/08 any day .... the 09 with the new frame might ride better but its also heavier ....................
Still don't think so. Any stock 600cc crotch rocket will beat almost ANY built Harley. I had one as a second bike for a lot of years and NEVER had any Harley come anywhere close to me light to light or anywhere else. You can't beat the power to weight ratio...
HA you just havent been running with the right crowd!

A 30 tooth drive gear solves that problem and then the bike becomes a red to green machine. I love my 6 speed. It's why I bought the bike.
Well after months of searching i finally pulled the trigger and bought a 06 Salvage FLHX. Got it for $8000.00. Bike runs strong and tracks straight, but has a lot of cosmetic flaws. Mileage is 20,760 Now the long list of restoring her as time and money permits. I definitely need to get some mini apes. I feel uncomfortable with the stock bars. also I'm a short bastard and need to slam this thing or consider other seats so i can get my feet flat on the ground.
Bike has HD wheels and Rinehart exhaust and a few other goodies.
Anyway, Thanks to all the people who chimed in when i had questions and concerns while searching. This is a great forum and will post as i make upgrades and changes.

You've got a great platform to start with. You'll be happy.
Hey,you have to keep in mind 4000 mi is like a new bike.I would rather have a 4k 2006 than a 15-25k mi 08.The price is not terrably high.It has the extras you like and its your color.I have the same bike and love it.I was concerned about the 5 spd also, but have no issues with it on the highway. The only thing I would think about is a stabilizer link.I have a progressive unit and have no wobble issues at hot speeds in corners. The 88/5spd is a pretty solid setup.Did 1000 miles of open hiway last week cruising 77-83 mph for miles.Never looked for another gear like i used to on my softails.I think the SG has a much better gear ratio for cruising.
I have an '04 Ultra with the 88/5 sp, true duals stage 2. It LOVES to cruise at 80+ all day long. That power train is a sweet set up, and pretty rock solid from a reliability standpoint. You're going to find it hard to go wrong buying a bike with 4K miles.
